Netscape 3.01 Gold -- exiting on SIGFPE

Post by Conrad Sabati » Thu, 08 May 1997 04:00:00

Netscape has suddenly started acting up on me, after running just fine for
weeks under XFree86 3.2/FreeBSD 2.2.1.  Whenever I click the "Net Search"
button, it shuts down, and the console shows it exited on signal 8
(floating point exception).  I can go to Netscape's "Net Search" page via
the menu, no problem, so it's not anything with the data on the page
itself, evidently.

Also, suddenly, when I startup X (via xdm), my system establishes a
connection to my ISP.  It didn't do this before.  What might I have done
recently to suddenly cause this behavior?

I'm really baffled as to what might be causing either of these problems.
Any ideas?

Thanks!

The magic of netscape.  You could try moving your ~/.netscape
directory somewhere - if it works, you can try re-customizing.

I assume you're using ppp -auto.  Try adding

 set debug TCP/IP

You'll be able to see the packets that are being sent out on xdm
startup (and maybe dfilter them).

I too have been having this problem lately.  Any suggestions besides
sacraficing another chicken?

Additionally, I have had some calcru: negative time errors.  If there
are any ideas on this, please clue me in.

Disabled Javascript and the crashes stopped.  Hmmm.

I think this was somehow related to my experiments with named.  Turned off
named and the problem went away.

Java Applets that ask for their own seperate windows will always cause
Netscape to crash on my system.  One sure fire way to cause a signal
11 is to try to view the Document info or Document Source.

If I run a Linux ELF version of Netscape, everything but Java works
perfectly.  Trying to run any form of Java will cause Netscape to dump.
I suspect this might be caused by Netscape looking at the Java files from
the FreeBSD version and not the Linux.

Too bad Netscape can't be as stable and reliable as the other Unix
software around.

This is strange since I cannot reproduce any of those crashes on my
FreeBSD 2.2.1 system.  I can run java applets in their own windows, I
can view the document source, the whole enchilada.  About the only way I
can get netscape to crash is through some occasionally obscure fiddling
in the news window, but that's about once every 4 months so I don't
consider it any more crash-prone than most software. :-)

Maybe the fact that I'm running at a depth of 24 bits has something to
do with it? I'm also using the Xi Graphics server.

I remember reading somewhere that this is caused when running Netscape
in 8 bit color.  Something about java not being able to run in 8 bit
color.

OK, as you said, if you turn off JavaScript the Netscape will not crash
when you click the Net Search button.

I went into Windows and clicked the button.  It goes to a page and then
switches over to another shortly afterwords.  I did it again and quikly
openned the file in the editor (I use 3.01 Gold under FreeBSD and
Windows).  When I looked at the data in the editor, it appeared to be a
script to decide which search page to load next.  This appears to be
where the error occurs.

At this point I would guess that there is either an error in the way the
FreeBSD version of Netscape handles JavaScript or that the script itself
has a bug in it.

I am ignorant when it comes to this, but I do have the script saved to
disk if anyone wants to take a look at it.

I have exactly the same problem with 2.2-STABLE XFree86 3.2 and
BSD Netscape 3.01 ( not gold ).

Everything works fine, including Java support, butwhen I click on Net
Search button, Netscape just catches signal 8 ( FPE )

I had this problem for long (no SIGFPE, but SIGBUS or SIGSEGV) until i
picked up this script from the netscape-xxx ports on ftp.freebsd.org :

#!/bin/sh
export XKEYSYMDB ; XKEYSYMDB=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB
export XNLSPATH  ; XNLSPATH=/usr/local/lib/netscape/nls
export XAPPLRESDIR ; XAPPLRESDIR=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults
exec /usr/local/lib/netscape/netscape $*

You have of course to install the browser on its own directory.
I is working fine, even with java ...

1. Netscape 3.01 Gold and Linux

I've installed Netscape 3.01 Gold (gunzipped and untarred) on my Linux
system.  Then when I executed 'netscape' I got an error message saying
that Netscape is unable to load the shared library 'libXt.so.6'.  This
library is in my /usr/X11R6/lib/ directory.  Any help with this
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance...
