modems and dial tone

the Usenet articles.  Thanks.

Are there any modems that *reliably* detect dial tone?

I have a microcom and it seems to mistake the human voice for dial
tone.  With the result, of course, that it frequently tries to dial
when someone is using the phone for its intended purpose.

Are they all like that or only mine?

What are the recommendations for a 56K modem?

Weird.  I've never had a modem do that.  :-)

That depends on whether your remote peer is using K56 Flex or X2 or the
ITU Standard V.90.

I'm fairly satisfied with the Zoom internal I bought recently.  For one
thing, it's configurable via jumpers to be either in PnP mode or
user-defined IRQ, etc. (yay!).  For another, it's upgradeable via
downloadable updates.  And best of all, it supports both Flex *and* V.90
automatically.

And last but not least, it's fairly cheap, too (I got mine at CompUSA for
about $120).

As for X2, sorry, I really can't recommend anything.

V.90 = about 95% X2 standard + 5% K56Flex standard.
Plus, all USR X2 modems are flash-upgradeable to the V.90 standard.
Personally, I'd stay away from anything that doesn't say X2 or V.90 on the
box.

Well, if your ISP uses Flex, an X2 won't do you a whole lot of good.  :-)

What's nice with the Zoom is that, if and when my ISP upgrades to the
standard, I'm already all set.  I like that.  :-)

1. How to stop modem dialling when no dial-tone present

I am using Solaris 2.4 PPP to connect via a Zoom modem to my local ISP (Demon)

It works fine, except it will dial whether there is a dial tone or not (upsets the wife!)

So can someone give me a clue how to alter which /etc/uucp files or whatever, so the
dial will wait (ideally) or abort if there is no initial dial tone present.  (I understand
the version of UUCP on Solaris 2.4 is BNU/HoneyDanBer)
