Has anyone written any software to allow FreeBSD boxes to take part in
a DECNET Network?? Or is DECNET so proprietary that this is not even
possible??

There is, however, a port for Linux available at
http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/8911/
so it doesn't seem to be impossible in general.
