frame buffer device supported by fbsd?

Post by A. L. Meyer » Thu, 13 Dec 2001 14:49:51

Hi! Does fbsd support the so-called frame buffer device? It
basically emulates text consoles in graphics mode and makes an
i386 enter graphics mode at boot up, similar to a Mac (if I have
understood it correctly). The frame buffer device text consoles
are eye candy and give you e. g. 132 columns x 64 lines at 1024
x 768 resolution.

Would much appreciate someone pointing me to appropriate docs.

Thanks!

Yes FreeBSD can, but not quite as well as Linux. I run 100x37 in 800x600
pixels, and its plenty good enough for me.

Try these:

man vidcontrol
handbook

So I can't get a fancy boot screen with frames and colors,
like the ones I get on SGIs, right?

So that means no, since I meant some sort of "xterm" during boot and no
cloudy screen with "windows 98" written on it?

Sorry, looks like I shouldn't post before lunch.
You're right, the mode change is done only a few moments before you get
your login screen, when most of the boot process has already finished. I
guess that, if you want the change to be made earlier, you'd have to
make some changes to the kernel sources...

Does 4.5 support the frame buffer device (i. e. text consoles in
graphics mode)? If so, which docs are relevant, please?
