dell inspiron 7000 notebook

Post by BNR:BNRTP:3I » Wed, 09 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I've received some responses to my post about the thinkpad, and thanks
for the input. I have another option, and that is to purchase a dell
inspiron 7000 notebook. The notebook has the usual bells and wistles.

If anyone has had luck in installing FreeBSD on it, then please let me
know. I appreciate all responses.

As it stands, it looks like I'd be ok in getting a thinkpad 600, which
is cool becuase that is the model I was considering. But the Inspiron
7000 has a 15' inch display. Unbelievable for a laptop.

Thank,
    Wyatt

The Inspiron 7000 is amazing...I love mine....I didn't get the 15" display
cos it wasn't worth the extra 300 bucks at the time.  Anyhow I am very happy
with mine....I am not running FreeBSD on it but i do know that there are
ways to make it work with Linux.  I am sure that the same would go for
FreeBSD.  Just make sure not to get the internal modem and select a seperate
PCMCIA modem.....Cos the internal modem is a winmodem and it is virtually
useless with any Unix/Linux os.   But as far as the Inspiron goes I like
it....I know there is a problem getting the video card to run with Xfree86
because the ATI LT Rage Pro card is not supported by the Mach 64
server.....Unfortunatly I have not messed with FreeBSD at all cos I am still
waiting on the rest of my comp that I am putting together to dump it
on.....Well you are probably even more lost so I will shut up and leave

Thanks

1. Trouble installing Caldera Linux on a Dell Inspiron 7000 Notebook.

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 7000 notebook, with 8MB ATI Rage video and a
15" XGA Monitor.

Installing Linux is giving me fits, as I'm unable to run the Caldera GUI
because
of video card/LCD monitor unhappiness. The installation seems to work
otherwise, but I'm stuck with a command prompt. (I know, it makes the gurus
cringe that I want more...)

What to do, what to do?

Thank you in advance for any and all helpful replies.

Steve
