WIDE DHCP 1.3 Beta not work on FreeBSD 2.1

Subject: DHCP 1.3 Beta does not work on FreeBSD 2.1

I recently got the port (FreeBSD-current/ports/net/dhcp) and source
(ftp://sh.wide.ad.jp/WIDE/free-ware/dhcp/dhcp-1.3beta.tar.gz) and it compiled
successfully on a FreeBSD 2.1. However, my Win95 (DHCP client) and
Lan Workplace (BOOTP client) cannot work with the WIDE DHCP 1.3 server.

Tcpdump showed the conversation as

09:15:33.454481 0.0.0.0.bootpc > 255.255.255.255.bootps: xid:0x5b025b02 [lbootp]

                0000

My server 172.22.20.3 (0:0:f8:e0:bb) tried to give the address 172.22.21.108
to the client (0:0:f8:1:17:7). It seems to me that even tcpdump could not
decode the BOOTREPLY message.

Do you have any clue on how to make it work? Thanks very much.

Yes, same problem.

After 2 days i've reached my goal, and it works in my school.
I've tried the same at home, but without success. The DHCP server
doesnt want to do a correct reply to DHCP-request from W95.
I cant figure out, what it is.
After disabling DHCP, i started bootpd, which sends correct
replies. But W95 ignores the incoming messages from bootpd.

Today i'll get my car and drive into this school. I hope to find there the
bug in the evening and kill it tonight at home.

Lars.

PS: You must DISABLE DNS in W95-networksetup, if you want to use DHCP !!!
    strange, but true.

I don't think this is so. I have only played with dhcp (using a patched CMU
bootp server) on a single Win95 machine, but I didn't have to turn off DNS.
This was some time ago (I'll try it again to verify).

WIDE DHCP 1.3 Beta not work on FreeBSD 2.1

Post by Philip Ch » Sat, 04 May 1996 04:00:00

I got a reply from WIDE indicating that the FreeBSD-current port of DHCP has
bugs and there is an unofficial port from ftp.phys.keio.ac.jp. I tried that
and it works with Win95 (DHCP client) and Lan WorkPlace (BOOTP client).

Port file for WIDE DHCP has some problems, for example, DHCP
server does not reply to Client.

I re-ported WIDE DHCP to FreeBSD 2.1R. I put it to:

ftp://ftp.phys.keio.ac.jp/pub/FreeBSD/unofficial-ports/dhcp-1.3.tar.gz

Interestingly enough, I've had NO problem getting WIDE DHCP 1.3 to
work with my windows 95 box (no, I didn't change ANYTHING except that
it should get its IP address dynamically)   but I'm dealing with the
same problem with a Lan Workplace for DOS (Bootp) and its NOT getting
the response... although the dhcpm program shows that there is a
response... eg..

Both reply, but if the novell box is NOT running bootpd, there is not
a valid reply sent to the client...

I'm going to try the other port... (fingers crossed!)

I had this problem as well... download the update from ftp.novell.com

1. Upgrading 1.3.x/Motif 2.0 system to 2.0.33/Motif 2.1 -- any problems/gotchas?

I've just ordered the SuSE 5.2 and Motif 2.1 Developer Pack ($99.95, good
deal) from LSL, which I plan to put on my new toy -- a P2/400 (Supermicro

machine -- a P5/120 (Aladdin/Triton PCI, AHA-2940 SCSI, ATI Mach64). Both
machines have 3Com 900 NICs.

So I want to upgrade the old machine as well -- it's a while since I've
spent much time with Linux that I'm pretty rusty; I remember the system as
sort of mixed elf/aout. The kernel .config says:

CONFIG_BINFMT_ELF is not set
#CONFIG_KERNEL_ELF is not set

I think what the comment signifies is that there is kernel support for ELF,
but the kernel itself wasn't compiled in ELF format. Does that sound right?

Basically I'm up for advice on any of this - any possible problems, things
to look out for...

2. Printer doesn't work properly

3. WTB: Used AccelX 1.3 or 2.1
