4.7 install hangs (CD boot hangs when probing devices)

Post by Dominik Mimr » Sat, 18 Jan 2003 17:43:21

I tried to install 4.7 on a server yesterday that was running 4.3 smoothly
for over a year or so. After removing the conflicts from the network
adapters the install CD hangs when probing the parallel resp. serial
devices. I tried many combinations disabling devices, even from the BIOS. No
success. When booting from the 4.3 CD with exactly the same kernel
configuration it works out fine.

Any ideas?!?

Thanks
Dominik

removing the pcmcia-device doesn't help either ?
(helps on laptop installs, sometimes)

Negative. Actually I spent hours with so many combinations, also one
removing virtually everything that is not absolutely necessary.

1. 4.7 Release Install freeze / Device probe problem

Hi all,

I've been trying to install FreeBSD 4.7-Release on my system at work
for 3 days now. Without succes. Didn't find anything relevant to my
problem on google so here goes :

System boots from floppies. Kern.flp : no problem. Mfsroot.flp: I get
the "Hit [Enter] to boot immediately, or any other key for command
prompt." ; go for "boot -v"

Kernel config goes without problems (no conflics remain)

Device probe scrolls by and I can see some error messages, then I get
the "Sysinstall Main Menu" (Figure 2-5.  on
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install-sta...)

At that point my system completely freezes. No reaction whatsoever
from keyboard input.

Now I would like to have a look at the device probe but since the
system's frozen I can't scroll back the buffer :-/

Is there any other way I can look these messages before the Sysinstall
screen goes up ? i.e. is there a way to "pause" the device probe ?

Some vague info about the system for now:

Intel Celeron 1300
Maxtor 2F020L0 20G
Intel 82810E Graphics Controller (onboard)
Intel 82801BA Ultra ATA Controller
PS2-mouse
Intel PRO/100 VE NIC (onboard)

Thx,
fab
