login_tty /dev/console: Operation not supported by device

Post by Scott Olso » Fri, 04 Jan 2002 04:24:26

I just installed FreeBSD4.4.

After booting, the following error message is sent to the console repeatedly:

getty[xxx]: login_tty /dev/console: Operation not supported by device

after this message is displayed 5 times, the system sends the message:

init: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping 30 seconds

I have seen this problem posted several times without any response.

Can anyone help?

Do you have 'getty' specified on the 'console' line in /etc/ttys? You
shouldn't AFAIK, it should be just:

console none                            unknown off secure

The getty(s) that handle login on the console(s) are specified on the
ttyvN lines:

ttyv0   "/usr/libexec/getty Pc"         cons25  on  secure
# Virtual terminals
ttyv1   "/usr/libexec/getty Pc"         cons25  on  secure
ttyv2   "/usr/libexec/getty Pc"         cons25  on  secure
...
