Please HELP !!: MODE_SENSE_BIG error message

Post by Javie » Mon, 21 Apr 2003 21:53:53

Hi

I've installed 4.8 version on my Pentium III 1GHz box.

At boot time I received a message:

ad0: 38166MB <ST340016A> [77545/16/63] at ATA0-MASTER
acd0: MODE_SENSE_BIG command timeout resseting
ATA1: ressetting devices...done
acd0: read data overrun 34/0

The messages repeats for a while (around 2 minutes) and the the system
boot's well.

The big problem comes when I tried to run sysinstall and I received
the same message for the same time.

And more problematic is to run startx and see that gnome freeze forced
for the same message.

I've tried all the solutions I saw in the net without success !!!

Then, I've tried to install 5.0 version but the system freeze after

ad0: 38166MB <ST340016A> [77545/16/63] at ATA0-MASTER

message and I vant install it.

Please, I want to use FreeBSD. Could somebody help me ???

javier

PD: I've used w98, W2K, Mandrake Linux and RedHat Linux on this
machine without problems !!!!

Okay I am bit new and this is what I understand. You are having a problem
related to a SCSI read issue. You will want to read this thread.

I don't know if it will completely help you but it is a start.

This should have nothing to do with scsi.  He is using an ATA hard
drive (note the ad0) and he is using a ATA cdrom (note the acd0).
I suggest he read the atacontrol man page and start probing
his system for a misconfigured deviced.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I've an HP ATA CD-RW but it's not misconfigured. As said in my
post I'm using it with W2K without problems and I've used it with
Linux too.

I thought there is and error in a FreeBSD routine that try to
recognize the device.

I've tried to boot with acd0 disabled in BIOS and I haven't received
the error message and everything works fine. But I dont like to be
forced to remember to disable my CD RW each time I want to run
FreeBSD.

I guess I'll to install Linux again till I see the problem solved in a
future FreeBSD version.

Thanks

Greetings:

Don't know if I can help, but I'll take a stab at it anyway. First
thing is to verify hardware is set up and jumpered correct. The problem is
the CD-ROM. If it is capable of UDMA you might try using the 80 wire cable,
although usually if it is cable related the error msg pretty much says so.
If it is only capable of EIDE the ATA driver is probably mismatching it to
be the same as the hard drive. To gather information do: sysctl -a and look
for the entries hw.ata.ata_dma and hw.ata.atapi_dma. You may wish to try
putting the line hw.ata.atapi_dma="0" in the /boot/loader.conf file for
testing. These problems have surfaced before with some mfr's cdroms.

Good Luck in any event   -Jason

What a pity (return to Linux).
Try: connect CDRW to second IDE port (Win 2000 should adjust itself
suitably) Then try re-install FreeBSD (or Linux).

I've been running CDRW, CDROM and HD without any problems since FreeBSD 4.1
(now 4.7) also with many of the too many Linux distros dual boot with
Win98, 2000, XP.
