Stealth24 VLB and XFree86

Post by David W. Ziegl » Sat, 06 Jul 1996 04:00:00

I've recently installed FreeBSD 2.1.0-RELEASE and XFree86 (S3 server),
and I'm having no luck getting X to run in resolutions greater than
640x480 with my Stealth24 VLB (1MB) video card. Does anyone have any
suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

I can only tell you what I did to get my resolution higher. When
configuring X and it gets to the step of changing the modes for 8bpp,
16bpp, and 32bpp I modified them so that 1024x768 was the the 1st
instead of the last number in each list.

Hope it helps.

Stealth24 VLB?  Is this the old one, from the days where Diamond
refused to co-operate with the world?

If so: no chance with XFree86.  I think the commercial Acclerated X
(www.xinside.com) does support it.  This card required a non-disclosure
agreement with Diamond to develop any software for it, and this matter
caused a lot of discussion back in the old days.

I've used various Stealth cards with FreeBSD and XFree86.  I found an
ugly workaround to this and a few other video card problems was to boot
DOS, start Windows where I had the Windows' Stealth driver loaded, and
then re-boot unix and re-start the X server. (Un?)fortunately, this
generally seemed to work. However, if my machine ever crashed while I
was running X, I would have to repeat the entire process.

Before I initially created an Xconfig, I had to use Windows and leave
the card in the highest mode available to see that same mode work with
XFree86.

I know it's gross...

I've had a Diamond Stealth 24 VLB since Diamond released it.  I've
previously used it with Linux and XFree86 2.1.1 and now with FreeBSD
2.1.0-R and XFree86 3.1.2.  I've never had a problem using all the
higher resolutions with the accelerated S3 server.  I'm including my
/etc/XF86Config.  I hope this helps.
