FreeBSD + NT-- anyone done it?

Post by Roy Woo » Fri, 19 Apr 1996 04:00:00

I've got DOS on my first IDE drive, FreeBSD on the second, and I'd like
to install WindozeNT on a SCSI drive.  The FreeBSD boot manager (can't
remember the real name-- sorry) is wonderful, but can it handle a setup
like I describe above?  And will it get overwritten by the NT install
procedure, forcing me to reinstall it?

Anybody done this before?  I've seen lots of postings about getting
FreeBSD to coexist peacefully with OS/2, but not NT.

Thanks in advance.....

I have used the OSBS boot manager (on the 2.1R CD) to setup
multiple boot parts for DOS,NT,UNIXWARE, and FREEBSD across
2 disks. Of course FreeBSD is the only one that can boot
across on the second disk. Linux can't do that unless you have
some of the boot startup code on the primary or floppy disk.

Want to do something similar but a little different, ie. install NT 3.51
Server on on my first hard drive which currently had DOS/Windows 3.11 on
it. Am running FreeBSD 2.0.5 on my second hard drive, and the boout
manager (not OSBS) manages this as it should. My question is, will NT
overwrite the master boot record during install, will it allow multiple
boots across drived and pick up the FreeBSD drive. If not, can OSBS
replace the FreeBSD boot manager on the fly or must it be done at install
time. I've spent a lot of time customising etc. my FreeBSD system and
don't want to have to do it all over again. You might say why not install
NT on another machine. Well, I want to run httpd 3.0 and NT Server 3.51
both from the same machine so as to compare them. Also I got NT at one of
those Microsoft OEM briefings and otherb than the doc etc. files on the
cd, there is no support from Microsoft or written documentation.

Can anyone help with this.

If so, would be greatly appreciated.

Hanns

I have NT 3.51, OS/2 and FreeBSD sharing two drives, using OS/2's Boot
  Manager.

What I can tell you, though, is that after you install NT, do NOT, under
any circumstances, run Disk Administrator.  It will wreck your partition
mapping and OS/2's fdisk will be unable to make any changes to your drives.

I hear that Microsoft knows about this problem, but I haven't heard if
they've fixed it.  Anyone heard anything?

I run NT 3.51 WS, Linux and FreeBSD on a three-harddisk system (with
Linux and FreeBSD sharing wd0, NT on sd0, and all three sharing
sd1). I boot with Lilo, which boots all three OSes just dandy.

OK, here's what my boot.ini looks like:

        [boot loader]
        timeout=30
        default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
        [operating systems]
        multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows NT"
        C:\BOOTSECT.BSD="FreeBSD"

The trick is to create the bootsect.bsd file using the dd command
while in BSD:

   dd if=/dev/rsd0a of=bootsect.bsd bs=512 count=1

and then copy it to c:\bootsect.bsd in the FAT or NTFS
partition.   Remember you can't mount an NTFS partition
directly and will have to transfer it via floppy in that case.
Also, this setup assumes all the boot partitions are
on the same disk.

Also, my home system is triple-booting between NT, FreeBSD, and Linux
by an extension of this procedure.
