hp printer setup

Has anyone configured an hp laserjet under freebsd ?
I tried to follow the instructions on the freebsd handbook but they didn't
work... I assume there's something special to do that I'm not seeing here.
here's what I get from the kernel on bootup:

ppc0: <Parallel port> at port 0x378-0x37f irq 7 on isa0
ppc0: Generic chipset (NIBBLE-only) in COMPATIBLE mode
ppbus0: IEEE1284 device found /NIBBLE
Probing for PnP devices on ppbus0:
ppbus0: <Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 6L/0101.01> PRINTER HP ENHANCED
PCL5,PJL
ppi0: <Parallel I/O> on ppbus0
lpt0: <Printer> on ppbus0
lpt0: Interrupt-driven port

when I try "lptest /dev/lpt0" nothing happens. Should I change the
configuration on the parallel port in the kernel ? if anyone has a similar
printer to this, and has gotten it to work properly, I would love to hear
from you.
My final goal in this is to have the printer shared through samba for my win
workstations to print from.

later,

See this cheat sheet on how I got My LaserJet 2100 (and LaserJet 5 and
DesignJet 1050C at work) to work with FreeBSD and Samba:

http://www.mostgraveconcern.com/freebsd/sheet.cgi?prn

Especially, take a look at Step 5 for a possible cause of your lptest
failure...

Good luck,

I, too, was having problems setting up for an HP printer (Office Jet), and
found the above great help.  But, I see only /usr/local/apsfilter/SETUP
as the way to run it; is this correct, each time I want to set up a
printer?  Maybe because my FBSD box isn't on line yet, and I can't send
the email, it's presenting the license agreement, etc each time.  Just
wondering if I'm doing it right; the first time it set up the printer
perfectly, and I'm ready to try adding another (second) printer.

1. Network HP printer setup help!!

Can anyone help me to setup the apsfilter so that I can print to a Jetdirect
print server for HP LaserJet 5L?

I'm using SuSE 6.1 at the moment, I can print to the printer but the result
is rubbish.

I can do it quite easily under RedHat's printtool. Is there anything
similiar tool I can use under SuSE?

Many thanks
