1. kernel build fails with segmentation fault

I have RedHat 5.0 system with 2.0.32-2 kernel release.

I successfully compiled new kernel image to include Sound support for my
ESS1868 PnP sound card.
Realizing MIDI support is missing, I attempted another kernel
compilation. I ran 'make mrproper; make xconfig; make dep; make clean;
make zImage.

When it got to making compress kernel image, gcc failed with
segmentation fault:

make: *** [init/main.o] Segmentation fault

I re-installed the kernel source and header RPM and retried but that
failed with the same result.

What's going on?
