PLEXTOR CD-ROM PX-32TS

PLEXTOR CD-ROM PX-32TS

Post by salisha » Thu, 14 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Greetings.

I have a PLEXTOR CD-ROM PX-32TS SCSI drive on slot 5 on the SCSI chain.
And, I have FreeBSD Version 3.0 installed on the SCSI hard drive on slot
0 on the SCSI chain.  At boot-time, FreeBSD completely recognizes the
SCSI hard drive.  However, when FreeBSD queries the PLEXTOR (cd0) for
it's size, it then forces a reboot when the query fails.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Does FreeBSD Version 3.0 support the PLEXTOR CD-ROM?

Should I disable the PLEXTOR so FreeBSD doesn't query it and force a
reboot?  If so, how do I do that?

Thank you,
sali

Hrm... haven't seen this problem.  SCSI CD-ROM drives are the one thing
I never have problems with in FreeBSD. ^^;  So far as I know, my
PX-32TSi works beautifully and no issues have ever come up.  I haven't
booted up that system in a while though.  I currently have a diff HDD
attached running Win95 so I can play Baldur's Gate. :)  I'll make a
note to remember to check it next time I boot it FBSD (which is on a
SCSI drive currently sitting on shelf).  I can send you a copy of my
kernel config file and a copy of the dmesg output from a normal bootup
run if you want...

I would hope so. I use the same drive here under 2.2.7. The message about
failing to query size should dissapear if the driver has a data disk in it.
On my system I still get the message about failed to read size but then
the system boots as normal.

Does the system boot if you have a data CD in the drive?

The other thing to check is that the SCSI chain is terminated correctly.

If the termination checks out OK then this is a system bug which needs
to be fixed IMO.

I've only got the 20X-Plextor, and it runs fine on 2.2.8-stable.

I suppose you have rebooted with and without CD inside.

At work, I have a Compaq-PC with a Compaq-Adaptec 2940U and a Toshiba
SCSI-CD, runnig 2.2.8-Release.
When I have these two connected, FreeBSD will hang while probing the
CD-ROM.
It will not boot-up correctly and I have to switch-off the PC and
disconnect the CD-ROM.

Compaq - %"$!&!

cheers,
Rainer

salishan> Does FreeBSD Version 3.0 support the PLEXTOR CD-ROM?

I don't see problems with the Plextor drives in my system.

Excerpt from dmesg:

cd1 at ahc1 bus 0 target 3 lun 0
cd1: <PLEXTOR CD-R   PX-R412C 1.04> Removable CD-ROM SCSI-2 device
cd1: 10.0MB/s transfers (10.0MHz, offset 8)
cd1: Attempt to query device size failed: NOT READY, Medium not present
cd0 at ahc0 bus 0 target 3 lun 0
cd0: <PLEXTOR CD-ROM PX-32TS 1.02> Removable CD-ROM SCSI-2 device
cd0: 20.0MB/s transfers (20.0MHz, offset 15)
cd0: Attempt to query device size failed: NOT READY, Medium not present

The kernel version is:

FreeBSD trinity.radio-do.de 3.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 3.0-CURRENT #1: Tue Jan 12 19:30:22 CET 1999

Most problems with scsi arise from wrong termination or bad cables. You should check that both are fine.
