Daring to challenge the will of the almighty Leviam00se,
: We have been trying to implement some slave NIS servers on our subnets
: with mixed success. Our NIS master is AIX 4.2. We have slave servers
: running AIX 4.3 and FreeBSD 3.2.
I don't have any AIX 4.x NIS servers. I do have one 4.2 client though,
and I don't recall having problems with it and my FreeBSD slave server.
: Most things work well between the OSes...but we're seeing this error
: when the AIX systems bind to FreeBSD:
: yp_all - RPC clnt_call (TCP) failure: RPC: 1832-005 Can't decode result
Yes, well, *when* do you see it. Under what circumstances. From what
program?
: Today, the situation got so bad that the portmapper died on our master
: server.
I *really* don't think this is related. The NIS master server is
supposed to be a client of itself. (Actually, all NIS servers are
supposed to be clients of themselves so that they don't cross-bind
and become dependent on each other.) The only time it has contact with
a slave server is when during a map update, and the communication
between the master server's portmapper and the slave server is minimal.
It's either a coincidence, or it's not related the way you think it is
: I'm searching for ways to remedy or work around this problem
: without any success so far. Any input or ideas welcomed! Thanks.
You're the only person ever to report this. Lacking more information,
there's not much I can do. You need to analyze the situation better
and try to create a test case that reliably duplicates the problem,
then show it to me.
