NIS problems

Post by qsou.. » Wed, 09 Feb 2000 04:00:00

We have been trying to implement some slave NIS servers on our subnets
with mixed success.  Our NIS master is AIX 4.2.  We have slave servers
running AIX 4.3 and FreeBSD 3.2.

Most things work well between the OSes...but we're seeing this error
when the AIX systems bind to FreeBSD:

yp_all - RPC clnt_call (TCP) failure: RPC: 1832-005 Can't decode result

Today, the situation got so bad that the portmapper died on our master
server.  I'm searching for ways to remedy or work around this problem
without any success so far.  Any input or ideas welcomed!  Thanks.

NIS problems

Daring to challenge the will of the almighty Leviam00se,

: We have been trying to implement some slave NIS servers on our subnets
: with mixed success.  Our NIS master is AIX 4.2.  We have slave servers
: running AIX 4.3 and FreeBSD 3.2.

I don't have any AIX 4.x NIS servers. I do have one 4.2 client though,
and I don't recall having problems with it and my FreeBSD slave server.

: Most things work well between the OSes...but we're seeing this error
: when the AIX systems bind to FreeBSD:

: yp_all - RPC clnt_call (TCP) failure: RPC: 1832-005 Can't decode result

Yes, well, *when* do you see it. Under what circumstances. From what
program?

: Today, the situation got so bad that the portmapper died on our master
: server.

I *really* don't think this is related. The NIS master server is
supposed to be a client of itself. (Actually, all NIS servers are
supposed to be clients of themselves so that they don't cross-bind
and become dependent on each other.) The only time it has contact with
a slave server is when during a map update, and the communication
between the master server's portmapper and the slave server is minimal.
It's either a coincidence, or it's not related the way you think it is

You're the only person ever to report this. Lacking more information,
there's not much I can do. You need to analyze the situation better
and try to create a test case that reliably duplicates the problem,
then show it to me.

I've only noticed it with "r" commands (notably rsh), but other users
claim they see it other times as well.  Nothing documented so far.

I know about binding the servers to themselves, but our master server is
so overloaded that it occasionally binds to the FreeBSD slave servers
and this is when these errors appear.

1. NIS+ problems. NIS transition kit better ?

The subject says it all. I have enough of this buggy NIS+
code. This morning, it cleared my aliases table when I added
an entry ! Now I cannot modify anything. It says "perm. denied"
even if it worked yesterday.

#FLAME ON
I'm sure even the developpers are affraid to look into their
source files.
#FLAME OFF

Now did you get better experience with the NIS transition kit
for Solaris 2.x ? I have heard a new version shoule be out soon.

Is it more stable than NIS ?
