KDE2.0-->KDE2.1.1 Upgrade Problem

KDE2.0-->KDE2.1.1 Upgrade Problem

Post by Dave » Mon, 02 Jul 2001 01:47:28

I tried to upgrade my 4.2 system from KDE 2.0 to KDE 2.1.1 last
night.  All the packages (I used pkg_add) apparently installed
with no problems.  However, startx fails and I get this msg:

   /usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1 : Shared object "libc.so.5"
   not found

In /usr/lib I do have a libc.so.4 and a symbolic link in the
same directory to it from libc.so.

Where do I get the missing file, are there others that are
missing, and how do I install them?

TIA,

You are hit by the facts that the ports are not in sync with your system.
Namely the ports are always CURRENT while you have some version of STABLE.
I see here that on my 4.3-RELEASE machine i have libc.so.3 and
libc.so.4, while your package has been compiled on a machine with libc.so.5.
You are out of luck. For sure you don't get such problems when you compile
from source (but you need a powerful machine for KDE!).

Or just wait a long long time for the compile to finish.  (I have
managed on a P166Htz with 32M RAM.)

hrm...i have a 4.3-stable box with libc.so.4, and have kde 2.1.1
working wonderfully. it is the binary, added with pkg_add -rv kde.

last time i tried compiling from source, it didnt agree with me to
well...kept erroring out in places. but...thats the fact of life at times...

this was the shared C library that was linked to the executable on the
machine KDE was compiled on.  you either have to cvsup your source
tree and rebuild the world to get the new library or compile KDE
yourself.  g/l!

Use the ports. Luke.

cd /usr/ports/x11/kde2
make install clean

1. KDE2.1 -> KDE2.1.1 upgrade problems

Hi there..

I am hoping somebody may be able to help me sort out this annoying problem..

I have Mandrake 7.2 installed on two machines here. I have upgraded the
Kernel to 2.4.3 and everything is fine. I have also upgraded KDE from 2.0
to 2.1 using the Mandrake binary rpms from www.kde.org ...  However, when I
install the 2.1.1 binary rpms, when I log out and log in again, I
get the message 'There was an error setting up inter-process communications
for KDE. DCOPserver not running.' When trying to restart x, I get the above
message and can't get KDE to run... I have to remove the new packages, and
reinstall the old ones before KDE will run again..

I have tried everything I can think of to get it working, but without
success...

Are there any packages I need to upgrade other than the KDE ones to get
2.1.1 working, or is there something stupid I am forgetting to do? (Bit of
a newbie really.....)

Thanks for any help :)
