kvm and usb keyboard

Post by Secret Gu » Sun, 11 May 2003 06:22:33

Hi,

I have a usb keyboard and a kvm. Doing nothing, the AT keyboard has
control. I can:

kbdcontrol -k /dev/kbd1 </dev/console

and get the keyboard to work. but if I switch to another computer and
switch back, it switches to the AT keyboard, and I have to run the
command again.

Is there a way to fix this, e.g. disable the AT keyboard?

About how to have the usb keyboard not get lost when I switch to
another computer on my kvm switch: Would removing atkbd support from
the kernel, and keeping ukbd support, get freebsd to not switch to
another keyboard when I switch to another computer?

Or if this is not the solution, are there any other solutions, aside
from reserving a keyboard and mouse for the freebsd machine?

I uninstalled freebsd, but am now considering trying it again, but I
thought I'd check first to see if anyone knows if this would be a
solution, or would I simply have no keyboad available at all if I
switch to another computer and back?

1. USB keyboard/mouse with USB/KVM switch?

I'm trying to use a MiniView 4-port USB/KVM switch on three machines:
a Macintosh running OS X, a Pentium running SuSE (7.1, I think, but the
keyboard/mouse is frozen right now), and an Athlon running Mandrake
8.0.

The Mac works, but the damned Linux installations "lose contact" with
USB when I switch back to them.  There is usually a one or two-second
delay in OS X before contact is re-established, but I can live with
that; I **cannot** live with the others' mindless idiocy.  Even Windows
knows USB better than this!!

Is there some different version of the USB stuff which will work?  I'm
running kernel 2.4.3 on Mandrake,  dunno what on SuSE (because I
switched...)
