cannot start rlogind and rshd

Post by Andreas Hinterleitne » Fri, 13 Mar 1998 04:00:00

rlogind doesn't start, it issues
"Can't get peer name of remote host: Socket operation on non-socket" and
"No such file or directory";
rshd gives me
"getpeername: Socket operation on non-socket"

What do I do wrong?

These services are run from inetd (look at /etc/inetd.conf).
You aren't supposed to run them stand alone.

1. Fixed: in.rshd & in.rlogind root logins

I've written a patch to NetKit-B that fixes the inconsistancy between
in.rshd and in.rlogind with respect to root logins.

I've put a symbol ROOT_RHOSTS_PARANIOA in the top level Makefile which
if defined will cause both in.rshd in.rlogind to refuse
(non-kerborized) UID=0 connections regardless of ~root/.rhosts.

By default ROOT_RHOSTS_PARANIOA is not set so both in.rshd and
in.rlogind will honour ~root/.rhosts, but still ignore /etc/hosts.eqiv
for UID=0 connections.

Without my patch in.rshd honours ~root/.rhosts and in.rlogind does
not.  This gives you the worst of both worlds: you are not safe from
~root/.rhosts modifying attacks and you are forced to transmit the
root password over an unencrypted connection to get an superuser
rlogin connection.

The patch will soon be on wcl-l.bham.ac.uk:/pub/bam.

I've sent the patch to Floran de Roche (spelling?) but I've heard
nothing in return. Does anyone have any suggestions where I should
send it next.
