argh! mouse problem with freebsd 4.0/xfree 4.0

i'm having a bit of a problem with XFree86 4.0 and my mouse cooperating
in FreeBSD 4.0-RELEASE..

i installed X today from the ports collection.  everything installed
just fine, i ran xf86config and all went okay, and then i edited the
XF86Config file to touch up a few things.  everything seems to work
great-- except my mouse.  When I start X, the cursor appears, but
doesn't respond at all.  no movement, clicks, etc.

yes, i am running moused, but i'm pretty sure i have my pointer section
set up correctly in XF86Config to handle this.  here's where i'm at.. my
mouse is a ps/2 mouse with a scroll wheel.  (its a newer logitech model,
if that's relevant).  i run moused at startup with this command:

moused -p /dev/psm0 -t ps/2 -z 4

and in XF86Config I have my mouse set up with this:

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier  "Mouse1"
    Driver      "mouse"
    Option "Buttons" "5"
    Option "Protocol"    "SysMouse"
    Option "Device"      "/dev/sysmouse"
EndSection

One last note.. moused in the console works just fine-- just X has a
problem with it.  also, i've tried killing moused and changing my
XF86Config file to reflect PS/2 and /dev/psm0.  Under these conditions,
it moves just fine, but when i click a button, it dumps with a Bus
Error, and says I have something wrong with my hardware configuration.

*any* help or suggestions would be appreciated-- i've been playing with
this one problem for a few hours now.  =(

PS/2 and /dev/psm0.  Under these conditions,

I have seen a similar message somewhere and the guy had its mouse
working by setting auto in place of ps2

1. FreeBSD 4.0 moused vs XFree86 4.0

Has anyone managed to solve the problem using Logitech MouseMan+ (PS/2) with
XFree86 4.0 with the mouse daemon?
The SysMouse protocol with the sysmouse device doesn't work. So I have
disabled the mouse daemon to be able to run XFree86 with mouse.
I know that XFree86 blows and 4.0 is a bug fest, but it's faster than 3.3.6
and it's free, so I really want to use it, can I get around this problem
with moused?
