quake3 / OpenGL problem

Howdy all,

I'm running 4.7-RELEASE with X 4.2.1, Mesa 3.0.2, and the new NVIDIA
drivers.  Quake starts up fine, but then I get the following message

...loading libGL.so: Initializing OpenGL display
...setting mode 4: 800 600
Using XFree86-VidModeExtension Version 2.1
XF86DGA Mouse (Version 2.0) initialized
XFree86-VidModeExtension Activated at 1280x1024
Using 4/4/4 Color bits, 16 depth, 0 stencil display.
  ...no hardware acceleration found...
       If this is in error, add
       "+set r_allowSoftwareGL 1"
       to the command line.

and if I run it with the recommended command line, the game runs super slow
and exits.  Am I missing a step here?  Is there a console command I have to
use for this?

But I do have linux_base installed....the 6.2 (?) version if I remember
correctly....and the nvidia drivers where installed after the linux_base
was installed.
