trouble installing 4.5 and 5.0 -RELEASE on ASUS MB

Post by Darren Welso » Mon, 16 Jun 2003 01:38:17

cross-posted because I am desperate...
I am running the following:
ASUS MB P4SDX, P4 2.66 GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM, and a GeForce4 Ti 4800 video
card.  This MB has a SiS 900 NIC on-board.  I had a Iomega Zip-100
connected, but disconnected during install.

I can install FreeBSD 4.1-RELEASE, but want to upgrade to 4.5+.

When I install 4.5-RELEASE, I can get as far as "Probing Devices, please
wait..."

When I install 5.0-RELEASE, my system hangs and gives several errors
including "Fatal Trap 9: GPF while in kernel mode" and the more common
"ata0: resetting devices...".

I have tried the recommended fix to address certain CD-ROM drives, "set
hw.ata.ata_dma="1"", but still no good.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be causing this and what I need
to do to upgrade?

Try 4.8. Lot's of things have changed since 4.5, and chipset support is
one of them I think.

You might try 5.1, quite a few quirks from 5.0 have been worked out (and
still some remains, I would think)

Based on your recommendation to try 5.1-RELEASE, I downloaded and very
successfully installed 5.1.  In fact, I am pleased with how well it
installed and I really like the obvious changes between 4.X and the 5.X
series.
Thanks for the tip.

1. 4.5 and 5.0 RELEASE hang at boot of kernel

When installing with 5.0-RELEASE, I get an error while booting from the
CD-ROM:

Fatal trap 9: general protection fault while in kernel mode
--> HANG
or

ad0: READ command timeout tag=0 serv=0 - resetting
ata0: resetting devices...
--> HANG

When installing 4.5-RELEASE, I get an error after I enter CLI mode:

Probing devices, please wait (this can take awhile)...

--> HANG
