squid problem

Tried to set up squid 2.3 and 2.4 without any luck.
Every time I start squid the child exits on signal 6.
Here is a sample logentry.

Last time I had squid running was on 4.2. Now I'm runing 4.3.
The squid.conf was quite minimal, until I gave up and deleted the whole
package. Now it's unlinked and I can't read it any more =)
I hope to get some tips here and give it another try. For a while I started
considering going back to Linux.

Some stuff I tried:
Recompiling with various options, including configure options as seen in
ports makefile.
Tried disable soft-updates on cache-partition.
Swapping some memory.
Stock source install as well as ports install.
Various prayers.

Configuration:
SMP
64-256 MB ram
IBM lvd on AIC 7890

I have squid running on a 4.3 box on a softupdates partition with 0
problem. I don't remember the version number of squid. It was
installed from packages 6 months ago.

Then any OS specific issues are ruled out since it is running on 4.3 for
some people.
It meens that there's something wrong with my setup. Or maybe it could be
smp related.
Unfortuantly it's hard to find anything usefull on this matter on the web.
Still hoping on some hints from here.

By the way, forgot to mention, its a i386 system.

It is squid 2.3 by the way. The system is an Athlon.

1. Intermittent Squid problem, no responce from squid

hiya
We are running several Squid proxies (2.4.STABLE6) for one of our
services, however we are seeing oddness in the monitoring systems logs.

To test the servers are up and running our monitoring software tries to
connect to various sites via the proxies to ensure they are operating
correctly.  At very irregular intervals (don't match up to running cron's
or anything), we get a timeout responce from one of these tests, the next
time it runs, there is no issue.  I cannot see anything in the logs which
look suspicious.  We are testing with different sites (google, bbc, demon
etc) as the destination and the fault does not affect the same site,
different sites at different times on different cache boxes.

From what we can tell the service is running happily, just these errors in
our monitoring are starting to become irritating (we want perfection :) ).

Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? or possible
solutions?

Many Thanks

Graeme Hinchliffe
