Sunspots.  Has to be.  If it wasn't you'd have provided us with details...

What version of FreeBSD?

What's in /var/log/maillog?

What is the output of "mailq" and "mailq -Ac"?

What changes have you made to the standard sendmail config?

Also, assuming seperated file systems for the mail spool, what's the
result of a df show?

You probably wanted to trim that a bit - a 7800 line posting is OTT.

Looks like you've got a config problem:

> pri=30297, relay=localhost.nl2k.ab.ca. [127.0.0.1], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Can't assign requested address

> Mar 25 03:32:08 valpy sm-mta[656]: h2P2l4SN000430: to=, delay=00:45:00, xdelay=00:00:31, mailer=local, pri=127847, dsn=4.0.0,
> stat=Deferred: local mailer (/usr/libexec/mail.local) exited with EX_TEMPFAIL
> Mar 25 03:32:14 valpy mail.local: lockmailbox /var/mail/john failed; error code 75

For mailq, you *MUST* run it as root.

As for your sendmail config.  Can you post the .MC file - posting the
.cf file is just a waste of bandwidth.

1. Getting mail to queue through a pop server or ppp link?

I'm having trouble getting mail to work on my linux system. (I can't
even get it to work locally yet.) Currently I have to options I want
to try, and need to know which is best.

1. I'd like to get smail or sendmail to work over my ppp link, but since
my ip address is assigned dynamically, that would only be good for
outgoing mail. (Can I do this if I don't have a neighbor machine to
route my mail to? I may need to ask about the address.)

2. Ideally, I'd like all outgoing mail to be queued for processing through
a pop server. Is this possible?  I've only seen a client for downloading
mail from a pop server, not sending it out.

Currently, no mail can go out except from my telnet account. :(
All suggestions are welcomed.

Regards,

Peter L. Buschman
