FreeBSD On Gateway G6-200 ??

Post by Richard Ingr » Fri, 16 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Hello,

I'm looking into getting a Gateway G6-200 PentiumPro box with 32MB RAM,
3GB HD and Matrox Millenium graphics card to run FreeBSD and NT-4 on. Are
there any gotchas that I should be aware of with FreeBSD on this setup ?
I know I'll have to get the X S/W from Caldera (I think). How about the
rest of the system ? Has anyone installed FreeBSD on a Gateway PPRo box ?

Thanks for any help,

Richard.

yeah -- no problems but you'll need XInside's Accelerated X (as you
alluded to.)  you'll probably want to use the following for ordering, etc:
http://www.xinside.com/.  i think in the freebsd-current mailing list
someone had some problems (bill paul?) with the cdrom being the
master ide on the secondary controller ...  i, however, had no such
difficulty with a similar setup.  of course, SCSI is always better...

I havn't tried, but I've been pricing PPro200s - get a Dell XPS Pro 200n.
It costs almost #600 less !  If you can wait a week and a half, ask me
how it performs then !

The only GOTCHA is that you can't use X without X-Insides (proprietry)
X server - there's another company that produce an X server for Matrox,
but I can't remember their name.  Get them to put a #9 in there instead
(or buy a Dell).

another thing is the Intel made feature into the chipset on your
motherboard killing the PCI performance... try to run ANY serious
graphics on the screen simultaneously and you'll see... i would
assume any serious SCSI gets jammed too...

and the PCI feature comes with both 440 and 450 series chipsets as
far as i know... anyone with better information feel free to
correct... yes, i wish someone would correct me and tell me the
pro chipsets finally _do_ work...

*shrug*

The PPRO in my Micron works just peachy doing graphics work.

1. Problems with Gateway g6-200

Hi,

I'm having big problems with a Gateway 2000 g6-200 and its
Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controller. I've found some FAQs that discuss
this controller. but nothing has worked so far. On another system
I built a 2.0.7 kernel and created a boot disk - it comes
pretty close but ends with a kernel panic. Has anyone out there
with a similar system got Linux to load and if so, how?

System configuration is:

Motherboard    ...   VENUS
Processor      ...   Pentium6 200MHZ
Memory         ...   128MB
Video card     ...   Matrox (we'll buy an X-server for this)
Disks          ...   2 2GB SCSI (1 at SCSI #0 the other at SCSI #15)
                     Seagate Ultra Wide disks ST32155W
CD-ROM         ...   Toshiba 4X-CD
Net            ...   3COM PCI 10/100BASE-T

I'm about ready to pull the SCSI card and stick in an IDE
board & drive. I'm getting the feeling it may be my only
option. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
