Jumbo-250 Floppy Tape Drive Doesn't Like FujiFilm Tapes

Post by Jim Dutt » Fri, 02 May 1997 04:00:00

For what it's worth: I have tried repeatedly to use some FujiFilm DC2120
(QIC-80 formatted) tapes in the Jumbo-250 Tape Drive (installed in a
Gateway-200 tower), and neither FBSD nor GWY-2000 DOS Tape program will
accept these tapes.

No problem with Verbatim DC2120 tapes (also QIC-80 format)? Oh well.

Did you reformatting the tapes yourself?

Yes - even afer reformatting, neither FBSD nor Gateway's DOS TAPE program
would accept the tapes. Oh well.

1. Iomega Bernouli Tape 250 floppy tape drive

I recently bought and Iomega "Tape 250" QIC-80 floppy tape drive
for use on my Linux Box.  It is listed as one of the supported drives in
the FAQ/HOWTO but I can't get it working right.  It works fine under
Ms_Dog and Linux can do a few things (very few things, like rewind &
reten) but whenever I try to read/write I get an error:  "I/O error".  I
am running the Slackware dist with all of the original files that came
with it (including the ftape it came with) and the kernel version 1.1.59.

If anyone has this tape drive working ok or knows the answer as to why
it's not I would appreciate any help.  If you can post the answer here
(for everyone else) and respond via E-mail to make sure I get it.  TIA

Here are some samples of the commands & results I get:
(and before you ask, yes the tape is formatted).

bash# mt -f /dev/nftape erase
/dev/nftape erase 1 failed: I/O error

bash# tar cf /dev/ftape linux
tar: can't write to /dev/ftape : I/O error

bash# mt -f /dev/ftape fsf 0
/dev/ftape fsf 0 failed: I/O error

(the above ^^ do not work as you can see, the following work fine ok, or
so it seems (I don't get any error messages)).

bash# mt -f /dev/nftape rewind

bash# mt -f /dev/nftape reten
