I downloaded 3.4-RELEASE from
ftp://ftp7.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/3.4-RELEASE/XF86335/

This is on a Windows98 box.  I ran ckdist like this, and this happened:

C:\BurnMe\bsd\3.4-RELEASE\tools>ckdist -r -t"md5" -i ../*
../about.txt: Invalid MD5 format
../cdrom.inf: Invalid MD5 format
../errata.txt: Invalid MD5 format
../hardware.txt: Invalid MD5 format
../install.txt: Invalid MD5 format
../layout.txt: Invalid MD5 format
../readme.txt: Invalid MD5 format
../relnotes.txt: Invalid MD5 format
../trouble.txt: Invalid MD5 format
../upgrade.txt: Invalid MD5 format
../xf86335/sums.md5: Xlk98.tgz: Checksum mismatch
../xf86335/sums.md5: Xlkit.tgz: Checksum mismatch

I tried re-downloading Xlkit.tgz.  No help.  I re-downloaded the sums.md5
file.  No help.  I switched to ftp8 and re-downloaded *both* files.  No
help.  What gives?  I Am pretty new at this; am I using ckdist properly?
Why is it trying to read *.txt files as *.md5 files?

Just a question, did you set type to binary before downloading?  I have had
Windows suck on some downloads because the type was not set to binary.

I used IE5's GUI FTP, so I didn't manually set anything.  I don't think that
could be the problem, because if it were, I would have gotten checksum
errors on more than just 2 files.  Also, I've never had problems downloading
other tar.gz or .tgz files like that.  OTOH, I'm grasping at straws now, so
maybe I'll try the CLI ftp and see what happens.

I didn't do that.  Instead I used untgz32.exe to un-gzip and un-tar the file
in question.  Now, a .tgz file will usually not uncompress properly if there
is any corruption in the file, but this one came out just fine.  So, I think
the MD5 file is foobar.  Can anyone confirm whether or not this is a bug in
3.4-RELEASE?

1. ports tree ``Checksum mismatch'' -- files moved at sourceforge???

I'm having an ``issue'' with some ports such as
/usr/ports/graphics/netpbm:

        Requesting http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/netpbm/netpbm-9.24.tgz
        Successfully retrieved file.
        >> Checksum mismatch for netpbm-9.24.tgz. (sha1)
Make sure the Makefile and checksum file
                (/usr/ports/graphics/netpbm/distinfo)
are up to date.  If you want to override this check, type
        "make NO_CHECKSUM=Yes [other args]".
        *** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/ports/graphics/netpbm (line 1496 of
        /usr/ports/infrastructure/mk/bsd.port.mk).

...Trying to ignore checksum:

        tar: Cannot identify format. Searching...
tar: End of archive volume 1 reached
tar: Sorry, unable to determine archive format.

The solution was to download the tgz manually (I smell a change in
location of file at sourceforge), save it in /usr/ports/distfiles, and
then make as usual.

Harry.
