In FreeBSD, the network card defaults to being in non-promiscuous mode,
unless there is an application open which requires promiscuous mode
(i.e. something which uses bpf, for example).  In fact, I'm not sure
that you can manually change into promiscuous mode from userland - the
only way to do it seems to be to either start using BPF or else
bridging, and then it's automatically done from the kernel.

What are you trying to do?

How to set FreeBSD network interface to non-promiscious mode?

hi nick,

I got this from dmesg;

dc0: promiscuous mode enabled
dc0: promiscuous mode disabled
dc0: promiscuous mode enabled

I guess it is because I have SNORT running?
Anyway, this is not the (internal) interface that SNORT should listen on so
I want to set this interface to non-promiscious.

You run SNORT. SNORT set interface to promiscuous mode. So, YOU set
interface to promiscuous (via SNORT). You want interface to
non-promiscuous mode at the same time also. So, kill SNORT or
reconfigure it to listen on other interfaces only or not to set fc0 to
promiscuous and dc0 will be non-promiscuous.

You can't "want to set this interface to non-promiscious" and "using
SNORT configured to set dc0 to promiscuous" at the same time ...

1. Promiscious mode or non IP protocol

Hi,

How can I put the Ethernetdriver (e3E0) under SCO 3.2 or Open Server 5
in promiscious mode?
Or how can I receive packets for a non-IP protocol?

Thanks,
