file system full

Post by Matt Haugh » Wed, 22 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I keep running into the problem where the apache_error_log in /var/log fills
up the file system.  I have not figured out the problem with apache, but
what i really want to know is how do i make FreeBSD recalculate the
available space on /var after i delete the huge log file.  The only way i
can figure out how to do it is to restart the server, which is not a very
good option.  If there is a better way, what is it?

Thanks,

The ultimate solution to your problem is configuring Apache to
write to a larger partition, perhaps to /usr, or some other big
partition.

You could put apache in the log rotation scheme.
See 'man 5 newsyslog.conf' Put in an entry similar to:

var/log/httpd-error.log 640 10 100 * Z

If you already do log rotation and the log just grows faster than the
rotation can handle, I suggest to:
a) log less (see your 'httpd.conf')
b) increase the rotation rate or lower the treshold log size
c) put apache's logs on a bigger partition
