Big ispell .hash files in dict dist

I installed dict from the distribution and it seems the
{american,english}.hash files are very big:

-rw-r--r--  2 root  bin  4647192 Apr 27 08:10
/usr/local/lib/american.hash
-rw-r--r--  1 root  bin  1978060 May 27 13:46
/usr/local/lib/deutsch.hash
-rw-r--r--  2 root  bin  4647192 Apr 27 08:10
/usr/local/lib/english.hash

The deutsch.hash was made from wordlists I found at the U of Kiel. Is
there a way to shrink these files?

1. british.hash Ispell file

I've spent a good while hacking away, and i can't get Ispell 3.1 to build a
hash file for british english. searching the web, i found a few british
hash file, but ispell complained of a bad magic number(?)

I'm starting to like Linux and Emacs, but i can't live without a spell
checker.

has anyone got a british.hash (any size), which they can post, mail or make
available for FTP ?
