I'm in the final stages of setting up my FreeBsd ppp configuration. I'm
able to query my modem. All the configuration files seem correct. However,
when in ppp mode, as soon as I switch to terminal mode, the screen freezes.
I've tried disabling flow control, it doesn't hang, but it never responds to
commands, just says initializing.

I don't understand what you mean when you say you can query the modem. If
I want to find out how the modem is set up (use AT commands, in other words)
I type just ppp and then type term.

I think (just a guess) you are connecting to the modem and then (by
switching to terminal mode) trying to connect to an already-connected
modem, hence the freeze. If not, how do you "query" the modem?

If you are querying the modem with cu -l /dev/cuaa1, make sure your
ppp.conf file has the correct device (cuaa1 if that's what works with cu).
