I think (just a guess) you are connecting to the modem and then (by
switching to terminal mode) trying to connect to an already-connected
modem, hence the freeze. If not, how do you "query" the modem?
If you are querying the modem with cu -l /dev/cuaa1, make sure your
ppp.conf file has the correct device (cuaa1 if that's what works with cu).

You can send all messages from daemons to the console by putting into /etc/syslog.conf a line which sez
daemon.* /dev/console
(in fact you could send it anywhere you wanted to)
