The easiest way to use ISDN on FreeBSD is to get an ISDN TA that acts like a
normal serial modem - e.g. an external one that connects to a serial port,
or an internal one that appears to the system as its own com port.

That way you can use the FreeBSD command 'ppp', just like you could with a
modem.  This is very quick and simple, and 100% effective I've found.

The advantage ISDN4BSD would bring is call logging, cost logging, monitoring
ISDN status, etc.

If your TA can do normal serial, I would recommend ppp - otherwise, try
ISDN4BSD.

HTH,

Tom

man isdnd
man ppp

/usr/share/examples/ppp/*.isdn
/usr/share/examples/ppp/isdnd.rc

Brian Somers made these conf files and they're pretty usable out of the
box, the only possible issue is << ERROR: idletime[900]+earlyhup[5] >
unitlength[150] >> that needs few adjustments in isdnd.rc.

Last you need at least FBSD3.4R to make a internal passive TA work with
userland ppp.

Search in isdn mailing list archive about Winbond chipset support.

Hope it helps, Regards.

1. PPP Connection Problem with Slackware 3.4

Hello Linux gurus, I am a brand-new Linux user trying to establish a
connection with my ISP.
I am using Slackware 3.4 with PPP version 2.2.0 installed and a U.S.
Robotics Sportster 28.8
modem (internal).

Using the How-to documents, I have managed to get my modem installed,
and I can dial-up
my ISP using minicom.  I can establish a connection with the ISP, and I
receive a prompt for
my username and password.  After entering these I receive the message:
PPP session from (207.217.150.21) to 207.217.134.6
beginning....~y{#.!}!}!} }4}~

At this point I cannot issue any commands to minicom other than to exit
without resetting the
modem.  I do this but I am not able to figure out how to access any
internet commands such as
ping or ftp to test the connection.  The ppp how to suggested to use the
command ifconfig to
view the ppp status but I am not able to issue this command either.  One
more problem, about
30 seconds after the 'PPP beginning' message, I am disconnected ( I can
hear the modem click
off).

So my questions are:  1. Why am I disonnected?  2. How do I gain access
to ping, ftp etc.?

Thank you in advance,
Brian Roche
