Problems with EtherExpress card and Meta-key

Post by Frank Hohensch » Wed, 25 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

I have some problems installing FreeBSD at my company.

- We have an EtherExpress 16 network card installed. The kernel
finds it at address 0x300 and irq 3, but exits after booting
with a "trap 12, page fault at virtual address ..." and reboots.
irq 3 also collides with syscon on irq 3.

The hardware-readme mentions to specify a start address of 0xd000
and an amount of 32k, using the program "softset.exe". I already
specified these parameters after booting with "-c".
Do I also need to run this "softset"? And is there a similar Unix
program, or do I have to delete BSD, install DOS, run the program
  and install BSD again?

- I would like to use Emacs (in console mode, not with X) with the
left ALT-key as the Sun Meta-key, and "backspace" instead of "del".

On my Linux system at home, I could change the "default.keytab" file,
but I haven't found a similar file under BSD. The "german-iso..."
file doesn't seem to be right.

Does anyone know how to fix these problems?

Many thanks,

Frank.

You are much better off putting it at IRQ 10 or some other place
harmless

You must run softset first to tell the board what your OS expects. I am
afraid that you will have to run this under DOS. Booting with -c wont
talk to the board unless the parameters you put in agree with those the
board has stored.

Very true. The bootup report does not check the IRQ; just reports what
it is set to.

You don't have to delete FreeBSD or install DOS to hard drive. Just boot
DOS from floppy and then run softset from floppy. Softset will force a
reboot when it's done.

Edit the file - it's ascii.  I don't know why these files are "wrong"...
I've had problems with BS/Delete under unix for as long as I can remember.

I spend some time on working this out. Here are the results:

I'm using the following keymap file:

This will:
- send 'META' for the left alt key
- send 'del' for the backspace key (which is expected by Emacs)
- define the keys for switching the virtual consoles to 'CTRL-F1'
  'CTRL-F2' ... 'ALT-F1' won't work anymore. I'm not sure if this
  can be changed.

If the backspace key doesn't work with the keymap, check the terminal
settings. There is probably a line like 'stty erase ^H' in some
startup fil (it is in 2.1.5-RELEASE). Remove the line to get the backspace
key working.

To enable german umlauts in emacs, use the following terminal init file.
It should go into the term directory within the elisp dir and the name must
be cons25.el:

;;; cons25.el --- define cons25 setup for FreeBSD

;; ISO 8859 Latin-1 characters are default
(standard-display-european 1)

;; Allow input for those characters
(set-input-mode (car (current-input-mode))
                (nth 1 (current-input-mode))
                0)

;;; cons25.el ends here

That's my setup and it works on the console. I'm not sure what will
happen with XFree86 since I'm not running a graphical interface.

I hope this helps,
Stefan

1. Using <ALT> as META-key in TCSH.

I am using tcsh within an xterm shell and want to be able to use the
ALT-key as my META-key for the command-line editing features.

All the commands work with their ESC-key counterparts but I don't know
how to specify (if it's even possible) the ALT-key for META.

Any suggestions?
