Don't forget that some motherboards have their com1 & com2 headers wired
differently than others.  Maybe you should try to verify that your signals
are right on your port - if your header cable is wrong then you won't have
the right signals on your port.  Another way to try it is to hook up a
modem or similar to it and try something like cu on that port ... if you
can wake up your modem and make it dial then you're probably OK.

Good luck ...

I'd recommend junking this two-button rubbish and purchasing a better
mouse with 3 buttons *and a real switch*.  Set it to three-button mode
and select "MouseSystems" as protocol type.

And don't even bother with a three button mouse w/o switch.  These
are even worse than M$-junk.

Is it seen by the kernel BTW ?
type dmesg on the shell (or dmesg | more, if it is longer) and see if it
finds the mouse during boot-up.
Erm, I currently don't know the name for the M$-Mouse off-hand and I'm
not posting from FreeBSD....
For X-Windows, you should get a 3-Button mouse (Logitech etc) anyway.
Mine was 24 DM only. :-)

cheers,
Rainer

A serial mouse ?

There is a M$-busmouse (msn0) and there are PS/2 mice (psm0).

For a Logitech ?  That's not bad.  Otherwise I'd consider DEM 24,-
quite a lot.  My PC-mice were 10-15, the 15,- one being 3-button w/o
switch.

Do you have the mouse coming up from login. i.e. have you enabled the
mouse
in /etc/rc.conf?  If you haven't open it up and scroll through looking
for the
mouse section (I forget exactly where it is) then look through the
rc.conf man
page, until you get to the mouse settings and pick a type (most likely
will be
'microsoft').

If you have already done this, then I suggest getting a real 3-button
mouse,
with a switch.

regards, chris

p.s. make sure in the bios you have com1, and not com3 (or on the i/o
card)

I'm assuming you mean XF86...

edit the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config file -- change your pointer
section to include the below.  This should do it.

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol    "Microsoft"
    Device      "/dev/ttyd0"
    ChordMiddle

EndSection

I just set up a freshly installed machine for X lately and tried it
with /dev/ttyd0 w/o success.  Even a "stty < /dev/ttyd0" gave me a
hard time to be killed (as it turned out, I had to first kill the
non-operating moused listening on ttyd0).
When I used /dev/cuaa0 for the mouse, everything went smoothly (well,
except for very minor XFree86-details like putting 60Hz screen refresh
into the config and later on requiring 60.07Hz, which is sort of
annoying).
