oracle 8.1.5 and free bsd, or what am I doing wrong??

Post by User &am » Wed, 20 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I am having a real problem getting oracle 8.1.5 running
under linux emulation mode.

System:
pentum 2, 256M ram

OS: 3.3 release

I have linux base and developer installed and I am running applix
for linux with no problems.

The installer cores EVERY DAM TIME.  I followed the directions
in the freeBSD oracle install page and the directions that came
with oracle and no luck.

The only thing I can think of is that the linux emulation is too old
it is a 2.0.x kernel and a 2.0.x glibc that got installed from
the ports collection.  The docs said kernel 2.2 and glibc 2.1 .

Could some one please help me here, I stoped playing with linux for
just this reason, to much agravation.

Thanks for the help.

marc

ps feel free to flame as long as you give me a pointer to what I
should have read first.

Hi,

I don't know if this will help, as it deals with Oracle 8.0.5, but:

        http://www.scc.nl/~marcel/howto-oracle.html

is a HOWTO on running Oracle for Linux under FreeBSD.

Correct, but incomplete. Marcel and I tested the Oracle 8i product and we
recommend (look at technet.oracle.com) to wait for a stable version. Even
under Linux the product is rather unstable.

If you want to try it anyway, we suggest you do the following:
- Install the redhat-6.0 ports from http://www.freebsd.org/~marcel. I
assume you installed the ports from the ports collection. These do not work
for Oracle 8i (glibc2 / glibc2.1 problem).
- Install Oracle 8i
- If you succeed, send a note to
http://www.bsdapps.org/db/owa/bsdapps$apps.queryview?P_BSDAPPS_ID=30&...

I have decided to go with solidbd for now, freebsd native binary and
a painless install.

Thanks for the help

I tried once (before going on FreeBSD) with SuSE 6.1 to install
Oracle8i. As soon as I tried to run the installer, it core
dumped. SuSE 6.1 has a 2.2 kernel, but glibc 2.0, and glic 2.1 is
required for Oracle8i. I guess this is the problem.
I haven't tried on FreeBSD since then.

In the meantime there is a 8.1.5.0.1 patch available for Linux, that
is supposed to fix some problems, with the installer. maybe it works
better.

You might want to give the Linux version of Sybase ASE 11.9.2 a try as
well..

Other than setting up linux emulation and setting up your kernel for
System V memory similar to Oracle, creating a sybase userid and sybase
group (phew), it's a relatively painless install...

Licensing could be an issue though...
