FreeBSD is NOT linux. The kernel is totally different.
Could might be able to run quakeII. first, install the linux emulator, turn it
on, and give it a shot. that's what i did with quake, and it worked(x11 version).

OK.  now I have little interest in actually doing this but It did raise
a question that is of interest to me.

There is a Quake II package for Linux out there on the market.

On the package the requiremnets indicate that it needs at least Kernal 2.2.4
or something.... Can't remeber exactly.

There was no indication as to which linux type setup it was refering
to.

I assume that all Linux kernals are compatible to certain point.

Is FreeBSD a linux kernal like the other "linux distributions"  or is
a different breed altogether?  Could I run Quake II on a FreeBSD machine.

It may seem like an odd question...but I am just not used to looking
at requirements for an OS that isn't DOS/WINDOWS......

        Thanks

FreeBSD is an entirely different OS.  FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD
are derived from the University of California's 4.4 BSD code.
For more info these OS's, see

http://www.freebsd.org
http://www.openbsd.org
http://www.netbsd.org

FreeBSD (and possibly the others) can run most linux compiled programs,
and I believe Quake II is one of them.   Go to http://www.freebsd.org
and search the multimedia mailing list.

1. Newest kernal ? latest kernal for redhat install

I recently bought the O'Reilly CDROM set for Red Hat.
(The Running Linux Companion CDROM, Release 2.1)

Before I install, I'd like to know what the latest stable kernal is
and any instructions on how to install linux from the cdrom using an
updated kernal.  The version on the cd is 1312 probably 1.3.12.

What is rembrant ?  Is this the newest kernal?
I'd like to find something recent b/c my hardware is pretty new.
I have a P-166 with stealth 3D video card and a SB AWE 32 sound card.
My cdrom is the sony cdu31a, which gives some people a hard time
configuring. I also have a zip drive that I would like to get working
on linux.

Please email me with any suggestion or sources of info.
thanks,
Ken
