how can i tell if my modem is configured correctly

Post by Peter Cho » Wed, 26 Jul 2000 04:00:00

i am trying to set up ppp with my usrobotics faxmodem.  i am sure that
it is not a winmodem.  i followed the directions from the freebsd
handbook.  apparantly there is something wrong with my ppp.conf file
because i get chat script failed message.

but i want to make sure that my modem is configured correctly.  is there
a way to test this?  is there anything i need to do to the kernal to
recognize my modem?

thanks for any help.

The script will return a failure if the modem does not answer. You can
try some of communication software in ports, or type at the command
line: echo "ATA\r" >/dev/cuaa0 if you have the modem on the SIO 0 (COM1
in MS world). The preceding command will make the modem go off hook and
you should hear a dial tone. "ATH\r" will likewise hang the modem up.
Look at your manual and see if your can echo dial command direct. You
can try his through the terminal in ppp. Try the man pages for a full
account. Type: term at the ppp prompt and type commands direct to the
port.

Have there been any problems using this modem with past installations or
with MS something or other?

What is your modem model number? Did the modem cost less than $15.00?
Inexpensive modems are almost a sure sign of a winmodem... we need more
info to help with your problem.

try some dailing programs such as mincom. These program will let you dail
up into your isp manually. If these programs dosn't work, you may have your
modem plugged to a wrong comport or the modem itself has problem.

how can i tell if my modem is configured correctly

Post by Peter Cho » Thu, 27 Jul 2000 04:00:00

well, i sort of have it working using kppp with the KDE desktop.  but i would
rather try and use ppp.  so, i know the modem (US Robotics FaxModem ISA)
works.  so, i am guessing that there is something wrong with the chat script
that i use in the ppp.conf file.

is there a generic chat script for a modem?  is there a way i can see what the
chat script that kppp uses?  i used the script that came with ppp.

    1     default:
    2       set device /dev/cuaa0
    3       set speed 115200
    4       set dial "ABORT BUSY ABORT NO\\sCARRIER TIMEOUT 5 \"\" ATE1Q0
OK-AT-OK \\dATDT\\TTIMEOUT 40 CONNECT"
    5     provider:
    6       set phone "(123) 456 7890"
    7       set login "TIMEOUT 10 \"\" \"\" ogin:--ogin: foo word: bar"
    8       set timeout 300
    9       set ifaddr x.x.x.x y.y.y.y 255.255.255.0 0.0.0.0
    10      add default HISADDR

thanks for the help

This is the top part of a working ppp.conf file. I have changed my
password to xxxxxxxx, but other than that, it's the working copy cut out
of my actual /etc/ppp/ppp.conf file.

#
default:
 allow users charlie
set log Phase Chat Connect LCP IPCP CCP tun command
 set device /dev/cuaa0
 set speed 57600

 set authkey xxxxxxxx
 deny lqr
set dial "ABORT BUSY ABORT NO\\sCARRIER TIMEOUT 5 \"\" AT OK-AT-OK
ATE1Q0M0 OK \\dATDT\\T TIMEOUT 40 CONNECT"
 set ifaddr 0 0
 delete ALL
 add 0 0 HISADDR
 # add default HISADDR
##mindspring:
ISP:
set log Phase Chat Connect LCP IPCP CCP tun command
 set phone 3540077
 set speed 57600
set dial "ABORT BUSY ABORT NO\\sCARRIER TIMEOUT 5 \"\" AT OK-AT-OK
ATE1Q0M0 OK \\dATDT\\T TIMEOUT 40 CONNECT"

 set authkey xxxxxxxx
#set login "TIMEOUT 5 \\r\\r-ommand:-\\r\\r-ommand: NI WOLONLINE\\r"

xxxxxxxx"
 set timeout 0
 set ifaddr 0 0
 set openmode passive
 delete ALL
 add 0 0 HISADDR
 #add default HISADDR

I invoke ppp in a terminal window session, and then type: dial ISP

The session then takes off. When the ppp prompt bumps up a couple of
times, I start netscape, or do the ftp that I had planed.

Hope this helps.
