Ok, download and install the package cvsup-16.1 using the sysinstall
utility.  Then, when the package is installed, do a man cvsup and read
the information there.  Then goto the directory
/usr/src/share/examples/cvsup and read the file 4.x-stable-supfile.
Modify the file as you need it, then run the cvsup program.  Hope this
helps.

As I'm currently unable to use cvsup to upgrade from -release to
-stable, I'm looking into other ways of doing this upgrade.
The handbook says that one can fetch the sources with ftp, but I
couldn't find out how.

Is there an easy way to do it, with /stand/sysinstall perhaps?

I've tried various combinations of Distributions / src, and installing
from a ftp server, but I guess I still am missing something,
because sysinstall complains about not getting some distributions (ie.
sbin, usbin, ...).

Can somebody point me in the direction of the place where this is
documented?
(I don't mind very explicit directions, either :-) )

I think he ment he cannot use the cvsup program because his FreeBSD computer is
not connected to the internet...

Then he will probably have to order the CD then.  Beyond what I have
described, there's not a whole lot he can do.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough; I'm unable to use cvsup because I'm behind
a firewall with rules that doesn't allow outbound connections on the
port(s) that cvsup needs (no, I'm not allowed to change the rules on the
firewall).
Therefore I'm looking for _other_ ways to upgrade my source to
4.0-stable.
As ftp is allowed, that would be a good choice. Now, is there an easy
way to download all the sources I need with ftp?
Manually downloading a whole directory tree doesn't strike me as the
best choice here...
Any pointers appreciated.

(alternative to cvsup for upgrading from -release to -stable)

Sorry for following up to my own posting, but I got all the good answers
in my mail.
The short of this is:
 if you can't use cvsup for any reason; use ftp & ctm instead.
Steps to do:
- fetch the contents /pub/FreeBSD/CTM/<branch> from one of the FreeBSD
ftp servers (check that 'CTM' on the server you choose has what you
need). Just put it into an empty directory (ie. /usr/ctm). This will
(for the 'src-4' branch) take up approx. 50+ megs of space.
- cd to /usr/src (or wherever you have your sources)
- feed everything through ctm, with 'ctm -v /usr/ctm/src-4*' (if it
doesn't work, use the '-F' (force) flag on ctm).

Now your sources are updated. Make buildworld & installworld as
appropriate.

1. FreeBSD 4.0R as a gateway using sppp

Hi.

I'm kind of a newbie with FreeBSD, so please forgive me if this
sounds like a stupid question.
The plan is to put up a firewall and also to use the "box" as a
gateway to my ISP (dial-up using ISDN).

I have a 3Com Ethernet card and a TeleS S0/16.3 ISDN adapter.

I added these options to the kernel:

pseudo-device   sppp
options         TEL_S0_16_3
device          isic0   at isa? port 0xd80 irq5 flags 3
pseudo-device   "i4bq921"
pseudo-device   "i4bq931"
pseudo-device   "i4b"
pseudo-device   "i4btrc"        4
pseudo-device   "i4bctl"
pseudo-device   "i4brbch"       4
pseudo-device   "i4bipr"        4
pseudo-device   "i4bisppp"
options IPR_VJ

and this to my rc.conf

gateway_enable="YES"
sppp_interface="isp0"
ifconfig_isp0="0.0.0.0 0.0.0.1 link1 netmask 0xffffffff"
spppconfig_isp0="authproto=pap myauthname=xxxxx myauthsecret=yyyyyyy
hisauthname=none \
callin norechallenge"
isdn_enable="YES"
isdn_fsdev="no"
isdn_trace="yes"
defaultrouter="-interface isp0"

Where do I go from here? How do I glue it all together?

Every bit of information I've managed to find is about ppp :(

I need help to see the light :)

Thanx in advance.

Eirik
