PCMCIA: MELCO LPC3-TX not recognized

I have some problem with recognizing the PCMCIA network card MELCO LPC3-TX
with FreeBSD 4.1.

The card is defined in /etc/defaults/pccard.conf for PIO mode, but when I
tried to boot with it it could not be recognized.

The definition in the .conf file (from my head) is:
card "MELCO" "LPC3-TX"
    config 0x1 "ed0" ? 0x30000    # some address I cannot recall
    ether 0xff0    # or 0xff, forgot.
insert /some/script $device    # forgot, and probably irrelevant
    remove /some/script

The first problem I had was that config 0x1 could not be found.  So I
switched that to 'config auto "ed0" ...'.

After this I got a reply of the MAC address being FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF and the
device was not configured.

I guess I am hoping someone would enlighten me and solve this problem.  As
the PAO package is not developed for 4.x, PAO is out of the question I
suppose.  If it matters, I am attempting this on a Sony VAIO, and there is
nothing PCMCIA related in the BIOS configuration.

Thanks in advance.
