FreeBSD can't sync disks with ext2fs partition mounted.

Hi,
I've run into a problem. I'm running FreeBSD 2.2.2 and mounts a Linux
ext2fs partition to run Applixware. I get the following message when I run
'shutdown':

Syncing disks... <a lot of numbers> giving up

When FreeBSD reboots, it complains about the / and /usr partitions not
beeing unmounted properly and runs 'fsck'.

The ext2fs partition is mounted from /etc/fstab using the line:

/dev/wd0s3      /usr/linux      ext2fs  ro      0       0

The problem goes away if I unmount the ext2fs partion before shuting down.

Is this a known problem, and is there a cure for it?

With regards,

I experience the same problem on 2.2-stable.
I just ignore it and it did not yet ruined my
ext2fs filesystem. ( I use it since 2.2.0 is out )

It is a known bug.

Never mind ruining your ext2 filesystem. Rebooting without properly
umounting your FreeBSD filesystems is asking for trouble. I just made
"reboot" a small script that umounts the ext2 fs and then calls the real
reboot.

Would it be safe for me to take the appropriate ext2fs parts from
3.0-CURRENT and swap them in place of the 2.2.2 code, or would further
hacking need to be done before making my new kernel?

And also, I read somewhere, perhaps in this newsgroup (although I
can't find the article at the moment), or perhaps in some mailing list
archive from some time back, that one really shouldn't use the
mount_ext2fs code with Linux files, as the code was somewhat buggy.  Is
this still true of the 3.0-CURRENT release, and if so, is there much
danger in mounting the Linux partitions read-only?

1. Mounting ext2fs partitions with FreeBSD-current

The scenario:

I installed FreeBSD on a SCSI drive. I have Linux installed on an IDE drive
in the same system. The IDE drive has linux root (/) in the third partition
which I can mount no problem at /dev/wd0s3 or some such.

The question:

How do I mount all my other linux partitions which live inside an extended
(type 6) partition on the IDE drive? There's only four /dev/wd0s? which I
presume refer to the four primary partitions allowd per drive. is there a
device to access ext2fs secondary partitions?

TIA
