4.7 Stable Startup problems

4.7 Stable Startup problems

Post by Dominik Mimr » Fri, 29 Nov 2002 17:56:58

I have installed a 4.7 box. Everything seems fine, but startup hangs when
starting standard daemonds: sendmail-submit and sendmail-clientmqueue.
Sendmail is actually disabled in rc.conf.

Any advise?

Dominik

You probably put
sendmail_enable="NO"
in rc.conf. Replace that with
sendmail_enable="NONE"
This worked for me.

Looking at /etc/rc on a 4.5-RELEASE box, setting
sendmail_enable to anything but YES (or yes or
combinations thereof) disables it.  Whether you
set it to NO or NONE or ELEPHANT would have the same
effect.

Also, don't forget to turn off sendmail_outbound_enable,
if thats what you want.

If you want to change your MTA altogether checkout
/etc/mail/mailer.conf

That's been changed since 4.5-RELEASE. NO and NONE now do very different
things in the context of SENDMAIL_ENABLE. NONE disables all of the
sendmail_*_enable daemons. Breaks POLA but at least it works.

I'll keep an eye out for this when/if I upgrade my 4.5 box.

Thanks

1. problem upgrading to 4.7-STABLE

Upgrading from 4.7-RELEASE-p3 to 4.7-STABLE (two different machines
simultaneously, same thing happened). I completed:

buildworld
buildkernel
installkernel
mergemaster -p

and then installworld fails with

===> sys/boot/i386/boot2
install -o root -g wheel -m 444  boot1 /boot/boot1
install -o root -g wheel -m 444  boot2 /boot/boot2
install: boot2: No such file or directory
*** Error code 71

Stop in /usr/src/sys/boot/i386/boot2.
*** Error code 1

This sort of thing has never happened to me before, much less on two
machines simultaneously. Am I doing something wrong? Has the procedure
changed?

Thanks for any insight into this

Ralph
