SCSI card error with Dell Poweredge 2200

Post by Nick Tonk » Tue, 22 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Hi

We have a bunch of Dell servers and on boot they report:

ahc0 <Adaptec aic7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter> rev 0 int a irq 14 on
pci0:15:0
ahc0: aic7880 Wide Channel, SCSI Id=7, 16 SCBs
ahc0 waiting for scsi devices to settle
(ahc0:0:0): "SEAGATE ST34572W 0784" type 0 fixed SCSI 2
sd0(ahc0:0:0): Direct-Access 4095MB (8388315 512 byte sectors)

ahc0:A:5: refuses WIDE negotiation.  Using 8bit transfers

The boxes appear to have an on-board SCSI card, with the Adaptec 7880
name, which does not appear on the list of devices FreeBSD supplies at
install time.

Has anyone gotten these cards in  Dell to work with full Wide data
transfer?

Thanks,

Nick

Well I'm not using a Dell but:

ahc0 <Adaptec aic7880 Ultra SCSI host adapter> rev 0 int a irq 10 on pci0:6:0
ahc0: aic7880 Wide Channel, SCSI Id=7, 16 SCBs
ahc0 waiting for scsi devices to settle
ahc0: target 0 Tagged Queuing Device
(ahc0:0:0): "IBM DCAS-32160W S65A" type 0 fixed SCSI 2
sd0(ahc0:0:0): Direct-Access 2063MB (4226725 512 byte sectors)
ahc0: target 1 Tagged Queuing Device
(ahc0:1:0): "IBM DCAS-32160W S65A" type 0 fixed SCSI 2
sd1(ahc0:1:0): Direct-Access 2063MB (4226725 512 byte sectors)

Quote:>ahc0:A:5: refuses WIDE negotiation.  Using 8bit transfers

What else do you have on the SCSI bus ?

1. Dell PowerEdge 2200/Embedded ATI Mach64

Hi,

I know lots of ? about ati mach64 have been posted related to OSR5.0.4
but this specific problem I haven't seen...

Hardware config = Dell 2200, Pentium 266, 128m,  7880 scsi controller,
ps2 mouse and On-Board ATI mach64 w/1meg (dell refers to it as

75hz.

I can *almost* get proper operation using  mach64.xgi, but... during
scologin, small rows of 'noise' appear at the top of the screen, and
get worse the higher the color depth is set.
At any res, any depth, the desktop appears and geometry is fine, but
I'm getting mouse trails - fragments of the desktop follow the mouse

are also hosed - just seeing diagonal lines instead of the font.  I
tried all combinations of resolutions & refresh, searched other xgi
files for other brands looking for something that might be a little
more "generic", but no luck.  I checked ati's site for programming
info on this specific model, but couldn't even find mention of the
model!? (closest were users manuals related to xpression).  Checked
dell's site, no help there; they say go to sco.com.
Found a few patches related to mach64 in the tech documents at sco,
and tried them in a blind attempt to fix.

Any ideas on how to solve?  where to get documentation on this onboard
chipset, etc?

As an aside,  why does video configuration care about what monitor you
are using?  Where is that info applied and stored?  (sorry for asking
2 questions)

Any help is appreciated
Don Peterson
