FreeBSD Network Question

FreeBSD Network Question

Post by Anthony M. Saffe » Mon, 09 Jun 2003 01:53:14

Hello Everyone,

I'm assisting someone in setting up a FreeBSD 4.8 server and have a few
questions. Basically, this person has a LAN that is connected to the
internet via a cable modem and has a linksys router. The FreeBSD machine is
just another machine on the network.

They have setup a few daemons on the FBSD box and now want to give the
internet access to it. The main problem we're running into is that, while
the local network has access to the box via the private IP, the internet
doesn't and the box doesn't have internet access. Obviously, I can solve the
problem of the internet reaching the box by using port forwarding and
forwarding traffic to the FBSD box. But what about giving the FBSD box net
access? How do I tell it to use the same gateway as the other clients on my
network?

I've gone through the handbook and either I am missing something or I am not
understanding properly. Can anyone help?

Thanks!
Anthony

Make sure that in /etc/rc.conf you have a line saying

        defaultrouter="12.34.56.78"

(With the actual IP address of the gateway filled in, of course.)

If the router also acts as a DHCP server, then all you have to do is run
dhclient on the FreeBSD box and it will automatically set up the route for
you. If not, then run

route add default gateway ip.address.of.router

as root and it will send all packets not destined for the local network to
the router. You can also set the defaultrouter variable in /etc/rc.conf to
ensure that the default route gets set at boot time.

1. FreeBSD firewall question + a really dumb question(yes I'm new to FreeBSD)

I need to get a firewall up in our office with no NAT.  I looked at a book
called FreeBSD Unleashed.  The book seemed to explain things pretty well.
Anyone else have an opinion on this book?

Okay, I tried version 4.3, but I could not add the iptables module.  Version
4.4 seems to use IPFW and the rules use a more english like syntax than
characters $.  Am I right so far??

A lot of the optins are turned on in files.  FIREWALL = yes in rc.conf.
Here is the dumb question:

In DOS i could use edit to edit a file, what do I use in FreeBSD??

Thanks
