SMC Elite 16 Combo EtherCard configuration?

SMC Elite 16 Combo EtherCard configuration?

Post by bill » Sat, 12 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I have a SMC EtherCard Plus Elite 16 Combo (WD/8013EW or 8013EWC).
It works fine under Win95 and the device configuration parameters
are as follows:

   Interrupt (I/O Port) Range:  0240-025F
   Interrupt Request (IRQ):     15
   Memory Range:                000CC000-000CFFFF

I copied the above IRQ and Port numbers (15 and 0x240) for FreeBSD.
But the system gives the following message (/sbin/dmesg):

   ed0: Invalid ISA memory address range configured: 0x0-0x4000
   ed0 not found at 0x240

(I wonder how to configure the mem addr....what is the 3rd parameter
(flag) for?)  Have I done anything wrong or missed some thing(s)?
Can I simply disable all network devices and let it detect itself?

Any help from you will be really appreciated.

Have a great weekend!    -Bill

: I have a SMC EtherCard Plus Elite 16 Combo (WD/8013EW or 8013EWC).
: It works fine under Win95 and the device configuration parameters
: are as follows:

:    Interrupt (I/O Port) Range:  0240-025F
:    Interrupt Request (IRQ):     15
:    Memory Range:                000CC000-000CFFFF

...and this translates to: 0xcc000 as a third parameter in userconfig.
You probably entered '000CC000', and this was incorrectly parsed as
something near 0.

: (flag) for?)  Have I done anything wrong or missed some thing(s)?

No. 'Disable' means 'completely ignore'. Since this is an ISA device, you
have to manually set up its parameters. If it were a PCI device, all
parameters would already be set for you by BIOS.

I tried your way (3rd parameter "Flags" set to 0xcc000) and it still
tells me the following:

"ed0: Invalid ISA memory address range configured:  0x0 - 0x4000
ed0 not found at 0x240"

Does anyone know why it did not take my input mem addr??
Thanks a 10^6!!!    -Bill

    It's still obviously misparsing the line if it thinks the address
    range is 0x0-0x4000.

    Try posting the exact config line you are using.  In fact, post the
    entire config file.

1. PC-NFS 5.1 and ODI SMC Ethercard Plus Elite 16

I'm having some really basic trouble getting an SMC Ethercard Plus Elite 16
network card in a 486 DX/33 PC working with the PC-NFS ODI driver.  I have
experience with ODI, IP and Netware, but this one escapes me.  Any ideas?
Does PC-NFS 5.1 work with "NIS+-only" networks?

Server setup: Solaris 2.3 NIS+ server (*not* in NIS compatibility mode)
  with ethers.org_dir table containing ethernet address of PC client,
  separate Solaris 2.3 DNS server, separate Solaris 2.3 pcnfsd server.

Client: DOS 6.0, PC-NFS 5.1 installed to boot using NIS/RARP (ie. no local HOSTS),
  SMC Ethercard Plus Elite 16 settings: IRQ 10, Port 300, Mem CC000, Ethernet_II
  frame, using SMC8000.COM MLID driver + LSL + IPXODI from ftp.smc.com.

NET.CFG file:
Link Driver SMC8000
        Frame Ethernet_II
        Port 300
        Mem cc000 2000/10
        Int 10
        Protocol ipx 8137 Ethernet_II
        Protocol ip 800 Ethernet_II
        Protocol arp 806 Ethernet_II
        Protocol rarp 8035 Ethernet_II

AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
PATH C:\NFS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS
SET TZ=GMT0
SET NFSLANG=USA
SET NFSPATH=C:\NFS
SET TN_DIR=C:\NFS\TELNET
SET TNW_DIR=C:\NFS\TELNETW
LOADHIGH LSL
LOADHIGH SMC8000
C:\NFS\PRT *
C:\NFS\NET INIT
LOADHIGH IPXODI
LOADHIGH NETX
C:\NFS\PRT *
C:\NFS\RTM

CONFIG.SYS file:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH
COUNTRY=044,,C:\DOS\COUNTRY.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\DISPLAY.SYS CON=(EGA,,1)
FILES=30
LASTDRIVE=L
DEVICE=C:\NFS\PCNFS.SYS /C^ /3 /R0
DEVICE=C:\NFS\SOCKDRV.SYS
DEVICE=C:\NFS\NFSODI.SYS
STACKS=9,256

C:\NFS\NETWORK.BAT file:
NET NISDOMAIN foe.co.uk
NET START RDR
NET NISSET *
NET PCNFSD *
NET LOGIN *

When I boot the PC, I use Solaris snoop to check for broadcast RARP packets,
but no packets appear.  The following PC error message appears during the NET INIT:

PCNFS  99F : Unknown host. Run `net start rdr hostname *' before other commands.
PCNFS 158W : Warning: no packets received from network: check connectors, etc.

Novell IPX loads and connects ok though, so the card and network are both working.

Thanks for any help.

Richard.
