Problems moving up to 3.1

I had a working 3.0 installation, and CVSup'ed to the RELENG_3 stable 3.1.
The make world went fine and with a bit of fiddling with the GENERIC
config file, the kernel re-compilation came off as well.

But apparently the kernel is in the "Wrong format!", or so it says right
after the initial boot: screen.

I am obviously missing something fundamental here.  Woulad someone assist
me in discovering what that is?

Certainly.  You didn't read the upgrading docs.

You should install the new bootblocks; the information you
need is in /usr/src/UPGRADING.

Don't diddle code to make it faster; find a better algorithm.
