XF86332, install, and 8.3 filenames

Post by Jay Roger » Sat, 08 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I'm attempting my first installation of FreeBSD.  I'm downloading
directories from ftp.freebsd.org:/pub/FreeBSD/2.2.7-RELEASE to a DOS
partition.  I've encountered a problem downloading the source for
XFree86 3.3.2.  The filenames for the source
XF86332/X332src-{1,2,3}.tgz are longer than the 8.3 allowed on a DOS
partition.

Obviously, I can rename the files to conform to 8.3.  What else to I
need to modify to get the installation to properly install the source
for X?

Probably the easiest way to do this is to *first* install FreeBSD.  Once
you get a working, bootable FreeBSD installation (text-mode) you can ftp
to ftp://ftp.xfree86.org or one of its mirrors and download the required
tar.gz files to install XFree86.  It's really quite easy to install if
you get the binary distribution.  Lemme know if you need help doing
this.. done it several times ;-)

1. RH6.2 only supports 8.3 Filenames?

On my 2nd HD, I use both Win32 and Linux.  I've noticed that at least
on my machine, Linux doesn't support long file names.  Everything is
8.3 format (i.e., filename.ext becomes filena~1.ext).

Is this something I need to change in setting up, or is it a config
file somewhere?  In other words, do I have a problem, or is this the
way things are supposed to be?

Thanks in advance.
