Q: Netscape 4.05 Bus error (core dump) starting Java...

Post by Gary Ra » Sun, 12 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I just installed Netscape Navigator 4.05 (native FreeBSD version)
on a 2.2.5-Release system and am finding that it crashes with
a Bus error when it tries to start (load & run) a Java applet.

Everything is stored under /usr/local/lib/netscape/ ,
and MOZILLA_HOME points there, too.
Permissions on the *.jar files appear reasonable (644, owned by root).

I've been using Navigator 3.04 compiled for Intel BSD systems for a while,
and it behaves as advertised [i.e., Java applets load & run properly].

Has anyone seen this behavior?
Is there something other configuration point I'm missing to make this
work as advertised?

Cheers -- Gary

Yes, but not on FreeBSD.  Navigator for Linux has
had this little "feature" for quite a long time,
and it requires a bit of a workaround to fix it
on Linux (IIRC it is because of something wierd in
Netscape's use of libc).  No idea if what you're
seeing has the same cause/solution, though.

FWIW, I'm using Navigator 4.04, and it works fine.

(Waves hand) Me too.  Every 4.x version I've tried) has had this
problem.

Shortly after posting this, and not letting the matter rest, I came across
a thread on the FreeBSD site that suggested the use of 24bpp mode with the
SVGA X server is problematic with NS.

This jogged some other memory about having read a reference that Java may
also have difficulty with a 24bpp X server.

So -- I adjusted /etc/XF86Config to use 16bpp as default,
and NS4.05 for FreeBSD now behaves as advertised -- color icons, java, & all.

I use 16 bpp as default too, but Java doesn't work in my NS-4.05 still.
I install NS in /usr/local/lib/netscape and MOZILLA_HOME point to
/usr/local/lib/netscape too.
    But... :-(

        Any ideas?

Is going to 32 bpp an option?  I did, and - voila!

you may want to rebuild the XFree86 font alias files:

# cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts
# mkfontdir *

--mark.
