About 3.1-RELEASE!

Post by Thomas Pa » Tue, 16 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Hi,
Tonight, I have found the newest version of FreeBSD, 3.1 on
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org.
I just want to know how to update since I have installed FreeBSD 3.0 and
don't want to buy CD-ROMs. But last time I installed FreeBSD, I tried via
network, it is too, too, too, too slow. So, this time, I hope I can do it
smart.
Maybe I can download something from that ftp site, and then install by
myself. What do you think?

Have you tried to cvsup? It's always worked great for me.. i've got a 28.8
modem that i use with freebsd, and cvsup usually doesn't take longer then 30
minutes(with the current sources i have already), then you just have to make
world, and rebuild the kernel.. good luck.

I am on a modem. I use cvsup. It works.

1) Go to the website http:\\www.freebsd.org and read about cvsup.
2) Download the cvsup package and install it.
3) Get the -stable supfile.  Put it in your home dir.
4) If you have an old set of CD's, install the system source code.
This is not necassary, but it will make your upgrade/download
go a lot quicker since you will already have most of the
source code installed and only require some upgrades(deltas) instead
of the
   whole enchalada(multiple checkouts).
When you are done you should have /usr/src dir that looks like this.

COPYRIGHT               contrib                 lkm
CVS                     crypto                  release
Makefile                etc                     sbin
Makefile.inc0           games                   secure
Makefile.inc1           gnu                     share
Makefile.upgrade        include                 sys
README                  kerberosIV              tools
UPDATING                lib                     usr.bin
bin                     libexec                 usr.sbin

5) Run cvsup as root:

    $ cvsup -L2 -g ~JOE_USER_HOME_DIR/stable-supfile

6)  Stand back....  Your computer is going to excercise just about every
muscle.

6) When finished, follow instructions at site on making a new world,
kernel and merging /etc.  <--- mergemaster port is best for /etc.

NOTE:  This looks like alot and, for the first time newbie to cvsup,
it is.  But, once you get it setup and running its a few
keystrokes
       everytime there after.
