RealPlayer 7 beta

Anyone have any luck getting this to work on 4.0 or 5.0-current?  The
damned thing starts up, but I don't get any video.  Of course, I did
set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the correct directory.  Yes, RealPlayer 7 beta
is out.  I didn't see this in ports, though.

I have installed successfully the RealPlayer 7 beta under FreeBSD 4.0 and i
don't have any problems with it! I  have executed the install program and i
have clicked on the next buttons in the install program.

Hi,

I have done the same thing under a 5.0-Current kernel
and 4.0-Current binaries (did not have time to make world yet) and
RealPlayer 7 works good.

But, do you get any video at all?  I get sound, but no video.  I tried
setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH to all kinds of things, to no avail.  I'm
running XFree86 4.0, so maybe that has something to do with it.  I
have a copy of ReaPlayer 5.0, the old one, and that works fine.

It all depends on the site you are surfing : I had luck getting video
out of a films site (including a wonderful moment with running
dinosaurs), but other sites came as black holes (only an empty screen)

I think I found the problem -- it had "disable custom sampling rates"
in the preferences section.  It was causing certain clips to choke.
Mp3's also didn't sound very good, either!  Well, of course RealPlayer
now playes mp3s.  As you may already know, RealMedia format is really
mpeg format, but real networks added a whole bunch of extra *to
the headers so that it wouldn't work with regualar mpeg players.  Just
mpeg format with extra/custom *in the headers. :-(  But, what the
hell, RealPlayer is still pretty nice, I guess, although I'd prefer
that web sites use streaming mpeg instead of the proprietary
RealMedia.

YEAH !

I never understood why real.com (who are spammers, btw....) could become so
important, as it still is, although this might change. Its contrary to all
internet traditions. I think there simply werent clients for streaming mpeg.
(And I never figured out how to do it with mpg123 from within lynx or netscape
;-)

Warning:  I'm really pissed off!!  Quit reading if you love Real
Networks!!

As a potential web developer, I can say that I can't see what other
web developers see in that RealMedia crap.  It's nothing more than
mpeg with proprietary stuff added.  If I were a web developer, I would
much rather go with the open standard, which is mpeg.  It seems like
RealPlayer keeps getting more and more bloated with each "new"
version.

I don't know -- why DO web developers use RealMedia?  Mpeg does the
same thing, and you have a greater choice of vendors to choose your
player from.  Plus, being mpeg, it would be easier to make a plugin
for a web browser, because you wouldn't have to rely on Real Networks
porting the stupid thing to your platform.

I say we boycott RealMedia, go with mpeg.  They've shown us how much
they care about unix with their beta versions that barely work.  And
please don't tell me RealPlayer 7 works perfectly, because the video
and audio get out of sync. (Reminds me of those old Edison movies with
sound, where he tried to synchronize the movie with a phonograph with
some mechanical device.  The sound and pictures never really
syncronized well on those things.  What year was that, 1900 or so?)

Also the thing plays videos kind of choppy compared to RealPlayer 5,
because there's some added bloat.  I hate RealPlayers.  Why don't web
developers put mpeg in their web pages?  With mpeg, you can get
variable sampling rates for low bandwidth;  not everything has to be
mp3 quality.  I'm sorry, IMO Real just added some extra *to mpeg
headers and called it "RealMedia" format.

I've talked to some Windows NT advocates, and even they prefer mpeg
over RealMedia.  Ironic, considering Real caters to them very well. Of
course, maybe RealMedia format does some things better than mpeg.
AFAICS, RealMedia = mpeg + extra *that normal mpeg players won't
recognize in the mpeg headers.  Please, don't tell me RealMedia is
some amazing format Real dreamed up, because I say it's mpeg with
extra crap.  I wish more web sites would ditch that *in favor of
mpeg.

Agreed, of cause !! ;-)

I doubt that. The only thing I know to play *.mpg video with audio is Windows.
And I never made it to play streaming video with mpeg_play. But I might have
overlooked something...

Is there any hope ? ;-)

1. Netscape 3.0x and RealPlayer 5.0 Beta 2

Whenever I run Netscape 3.0x and I want to be able to get Java working,
I must use the Java fix script from blackdown.org.  They work great,
until recently.  I have upraded from RealAudio 3.0 to the RealPlayer 5.0
Beta 2 that comes with Red Hat 5.0, and this causes a problem with this
fix.  I know it is the fix because whenever I remove this, the problem
goes away.  The only bad thing is that, if I want Java (which I do!) I
need the fix script.  I also want RealPlayer, but as it seems, I can't
have both.  Is there another fix to this problem, or maybe this is just
a problem with the Beta version of RealPlayer (I hope!).  BTW, here is
the error I get from Netscape, and my fix script:

Java fix:
#!/bin/sh
export CLASSPATH="/usr/local/netscape/java/classes/java_301:."
export LD_PRELOAD="/lib/gnumalloc.so"

Error:
sh: error loading shared librarys
/lib/gnumalloc.so: undefined symbols: ___default___movecore___init
