Does FreeBSD support Ultra/66 Ultra/33 ?

Post by Peter Dosh » Mon, 16 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Attn. Hardware Gurus,

I'm piecing togehter a new system for myself and I'm having some
difficulty figuring out whether certain will be able to work properly or
fully in FreeBSD or not.

Here's the hardware in question:

  Setup #1
        AMD K6-III 450MHz
        FIC PA-2013 Motherboard: Ultra/33 support
        IBM 14GXP: 14.4GB, 7200RPM, Ultra/33

  Setup #2
        AMD K6-III 450MHz
        FIC PA-2013 Motherboard: Ultra/33 support
        Promise Ultra/66 PCI Controller Card
        Western Dig. AC418000, 7200RPM, Ultra/66

Will either of these setups cause a problem?
Has anybody worked with this hardware?
Anybody know where FreeBSD is in terms of handing Ultra/33 and Ultra/66?

If you have any ideas or suggestions it would be very appreciated.

Thanks a bunch,
Peter

Does FreeBSD support Ultra/66 Ultra/33 ?

Peter,

I'm running a AMD-K6-2 350, with a Shuttle (so shoot me, it was cheap)
motherboard.  I have an IBM HD which is DMA/33.   DMA/33 controllers are
IDE, so they work. ATA/66 controllers should not cause any problems, if
they function as boot devices (i.e., you can boot drives of them form
the BIOS and they don't need Windows drivers to work)

Does FreeBSD support Ultra/66 Ultra/33 ?

I believe you need to build a custom kernel to take advantage of the
UltraDMA33 though...

No, just boot with -v and set the IDE controller flags to 0xa0ffa0ff.

You can also add that flag to disk line in your kernel config
and recompile. (eg: disk wd0 at wdc0 drive 0 flags 0xa0ffa0ff)

1. More Ultra DMA 66 w/ Ultra DMA/33 IDE protocol Support

Hi...

Well...  I'm wondering if (through the use of a flag...  somewhere...)
FreeBSD will support the ABIT BP6 motherboard with Ultra DMA 66 w/ Ultra
DMA/33 IDE protocol support.  Any input would be appreciated regarding the
UDMA protocol or the motherboard in particular.

Thanks,
Bryan
