Help: X startup dies (TCP error?)

Post by Chris Sterri » Sat, 04 Sep 1993 09:48:40

Hello,

I have SLS 1.03, so .99pl12 kernal, the x8514.scale driver
installed (with X linked to it), and initially I didn't install TCP
because I'm not on a net, have no ethernet card, etc.  All those bogus
reasons :-).  I got the following, tried sysinstall'ing TCP, and get
the same thing.  HELP...  please...

Setting TCP SO_LINGER: Protocol not available
no SIOCGIFCONF yet
X386 Version 1.2 / X Windows System [linux v1.1 8514/A alpha]
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 5000)

ibm8514

Fatal server error:
Cannot obtain required I/O privilege level

giving up.
xinit:  Invalid argument (errno 22):  unable to connect to X server
xinit:  No such process (errno 3):  Server error.

        Thanks very much in advance,

setuid your X server to root

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root            7 Aug 18 20:41 /usr/X386/bin/X ->XS3-928*
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     root         9220 Apr 11 01:46 /usr/X386/bin/XConsole*
-rwsr-xr-x   1 root     other      840708 Jul 22 09:32 /usr/X386/bin/XS3-928*

as root:
chown root X8514  (filename of your Xserver)
chmod u+s X8514

This should work.

1. TTloop: Peer died: unknown error in syslog (tcp stop / tcp start needed)

We are using sco 5.0.5

Can anyone help me with the following error

In /usr/adm/syslog the following error

TTloop:   peer died unknown error

Once in about 4 days we get this message in syslog, and all P.C's are not
pingable from the server anymore.
When we do tcp stop / tcp start it is working again.

( We are using dhcp, could this be the problem ? )

Any suggestions ?

:(
